Abstract:
In October 1986 the Australian parliament passed a joint resolution calling for the rescission of UN resolution 3379 which equated Zionism with racism. This was the first time any nation, except Israel, had formalized a request for the UN to revoke resolution 3379. The Australian resolution was preceded by a two-year campaign against 3379, led by Israel and the World Zionist Organization, and spearheaded in Australia by the Zionist Federation of Australia, headed by Mark Leibler. Using Australia as an example, Jewish activists around the world began to lobby their governments to adopt similar resolutions. Dwells on the attitude of Foreign Minister Bill Hayden (later Governor-General of Australia), who supported the anti-3379 resolution in Australia. While he was sympathetic to the Palestinians' plight, Hayden believed that 3379 was doing more to harm than help the Palestinians, and he was disappointed with Yasser Arafat's leadership. In 1991, resolution 3379 was revoked in the UN. This revocation did not end the allegation that Israel discriminated against the Palestinians, nor did it end the diplomatic campaign to delegitimize Israel's right to exist. Pp. 237-238 contain the text of UN resolution 3379.
