Abstract:
Examines fifteen major Australian Christian periodicals published between 1986-87. A "Postscript" (pp. 111-114) covers reactions to the Intifada in Gaza in 1987-88. Covers English-language periodicals representing the whole spectrum of Australian Christian Churches: Anglican, Catholic, Unitarian, Presbyterian, Baptist, and some fundamentalist groups politically oriented from the far-left to the extreme-right. Points to the antisemitic and anti-Israel attitude expressed by the far-left Unitarian journal "The Beacon" and by the journal "In Unity" issued by the Australian Council of Churches (Protestant), as well as the hostile stand of the Catholic "News Weekly" to Jewish efforts to bring to trial war criminals who had settled in Australia. Concludes that the Catholic press is better disposed towards Jews and Israel than that of the Protestants. A deep-seated ideological hostility is perceived in the far-left Christian press. The appendices contain a reprint of Niall Brennan's antisemitic article "Where Gentiles Fear to Tread" (from "The Advocate Magazine, " 19 November 1987) and other articles from the Australian press on the Jews and on Israel.
