Abstract: Adapted from a paper presented at the Second Asian-Jewish Colloquium held in Hong Kong, March 1987. Discusses antisemitic remarks made by Prime Minister Mohammad Mahathir in 1986 "charging that Zionists and Jews, without distinction, were trying to destabilise the country through a campaign in Jewish-controlled media". As Islam is the cornerstone of Malay identity, Mahathir's support for the PLO and his anti-Zionism serve a domestic function; but his attitude reflects an established prejudice among the dominant Malay-Muslim community which does not distinguish between Zionists and Jews. Mahathir seems to have revised his views in light of ensuing criticism. Mentions the publication of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" in 1983 in Malaysia as an influence on popular antisemitism.
