Abstract: "Leo Baeck (1873-1956) was a famous Jewish thinker and the leader of German Jewry during the Holocaust. This book offers the first interpretation of his religious thought as political, showing how Baeck, along with German-Jewish thought more broadly, cannot be properly understood without the imperial context"--

Abstract: Colonialism and the Jews in German History brings together new and path-breaking studies on the historical relationship between colonialism and the Jews in Germany. The book considers the mutual influences on the situation of the Jews in Germany, including attitudes towards Jews and anti-Semitism but also Jewish self-conceptions, and the ideology and politics of German colonialism. The contributors discuss the ways in which colonial ideology and practice have affected the position of the Jews in Germany, and the relationship between anti-Semitism and colonial racism. In doing so, the volume introduces German colonialism as a relevant context for German-Jewish history, and it expands the perspective on German colonial history significantly by considering Jews both as distinct objects and also as agents within the field of German colonialism. The volume includes studies on the pre-colonial era, the phase of active German colonialism since the 1880s, and the time after Germany lost its colonies in the First World War. All these studies testify to the fact that German-Jewish history takes on additional significance if seen as part of a global history of collective relationships.

Abstract: Following the Suez War, Israel demanded freedom of passage through the Suez Canal. By July 1957, a tacit understanding was reached in which Egypt acquiesced to passage of Israeli goods on foreign ships. Nevertheless, in March 1959, the Egyptians suddenly breached the agreement. The UNSG subsequently formulated a new tacit arrangement: the “effective stand.” Egypt refused to “play the game” while Israel refrained from military response, recognizing that such a response could endanger the two countries’ only shared interest: an aversion to war.

Abstract: This article examines American Israeli relations since the establishment of the state in 1948 to the present. It presents a combination of historical and theoretical analysis. It uses the concept of ‘special relationship’ to analyse major issues in the evolution of bilateral relations including US support for Israel’s independence, Arab-Israeli wars, Palestinian terrorism, mediation, peace agreements, foreign aid, public opinion, attitudes of American Jews and a look at the future. The article reveals strong strategic ties between the two allies but also cracks that threaten to damage the special relationship, including the loss of bipartisanship support, new strategic priorities in US foreign policy, political polarisation, distancing among American Jews, demographic changes, and effects of the 2023 judicial reform in Israel.

Abstract: Relations between Moscow and Jerusalem have seen numerous ups and downs since the birth of Israel in 1948. Two main issues have dominated the relationship. The first is security, with the Soviet Union, then the Russian Federation providing diplomatic support and military aid to Israel’s enemies, especially, in recent years, to Iran and Syria. The second issue is the freedom of Jewish emigration to Israel. Finally, since the advent of Vladimir Putin, Israel has been very much the junior partner in the relationship giving Russia much more than it has received in return.

Abstract: During its 75 years of existence, Israel’s strategies vis-à-vis its neighbours have alternated drastically in accordance with the vicissitudes in regional and global affairs: from reliance on force, to a status quo approach, to combining ‘land-for-peace’ approach while participating in ‘new wars’, to peace initiation, to unilateral action, to improved relations with the Arab world while trying to avoid the Palestinian issue. This article describes the evolution of these strategies, discusses their origin and underlying assumptions, and assesses their future implications.

Abstract: As a close ally of Shah Muhammad Reza Pahlavi, Israel participated in the September 1974 Asian Games – the ‘Asian Olympics’ – that were held in Tehran. Among the 18 sports in which athletes competed, football attracted the most attention, especially after Iran’s historic victory over Israel in the AFC Asian Cup in 1968. As both countries reached the final of the Games’ football tournament, the match came to be seen by Iranians as nothing short of war. Standing in stark contradiction to the close and multifaceted relations between Jerusalem and the monarchical regime, this public attitude was lost on Israeli decisionmakers in what foreshadowed the failure to anticipate the Islamic revolution and the attendant collapse of Iranian-Israeli relations five years later.

Abstract: The nature of the relationship between statecraft and third-party interventions is complex and remains an issue that has not been fully explored in the academic literature. Experience shows that the two often interact, at times creating harmonious coordination, at times exacerbating tensions. These actions and reactions were present for Israel after the War of Independence as it worked to form an effective approach to the UN and its peacekeeping forces that were created to supervise implementation of the 1949 Arab-Israeli armistice agreements. This article examines how Israel strove to develop its own foreign policy statecraft strategies and to protect its national and strategic interests in the early 1960s, while contending with the involvement of UNTSO under the activist leadership of Swedish Maj. Gen. Carl Von Horn.

Abstract: Australia played an important role in the acceptance of the November 1947 UN Partition Resolution underpinning the establishment of the State of Israel, recognising the nascent Jewish state in January 1949 and presiding over its admission to the UN four months later. In subsequent decades, the two states have developed a close and warm relationship (albeit not without the odd political disagreement) and multifaceted political, economic, technological, and strategic collaboration. This article explores the nature and characteristics of this relationship as it evolved the past seven decades in an attempt to determine its underlying causes and most important driving forces.

Abstract: Israel’s relations with the Arab world underwent dramatic changes during its seventy-five years of existence – from hostility and enmity to peacemaking and reconciliation. This development is the result of the strengthening of Israel’s regional and international position on the one hand, and the weakening of the Arab world and the Arab states’ withdrawal into themselves in the face of the socioeconomic problems confronting them, on the other. And while the regional fear of Iran’s hegemonic drive has played an important role in the evolution of Israeli-Arab cooperation, the potential for consolidation of the nascent relationship goes well beyond the Iranian threat as both sides share weighty political, security and economic interests such as fighting radical Islam, promoting regional stability and security, and ensuring economic prosperity. Yet while the Palestinian issue didn’t prevent the consolidation of Arab-Israeli relations, it remains the lowest common denominator for Arab public opinion in its search for identity and meaning. As such, it will continue to threaten regional stability and the building of Israel’s relations with its Arab partners.

Abstract: The normalization of relations between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel under the Abraham Accords is part of a long-standing security cooperation between the two regimes to monopolize regional power. Indeed, with the rapidly changing political and security landscape in the Arab world, the Abraham Accords have become central to understanding alliance formation in the region. The Accords have significantly enhanced the already existing security and military relations between Israel and the UAE, with heavy Emirati investment in advanced Israeli weapons systems and security technologies, military and intelligence sharing, as well as economic partnerships in strategic sectors. While the alliance is often portrayed as a defensive security arrangement aimed at countering the “Iranian threat,” a closer examination reveals that it is much more than that. Sponsored by the United States, the alliance entrenches Israeli settler colonialism and Arab authoritarianism as mutually inclusive pillars for the region, with the ultimate objective of reproducing US hegemony in the face of changing global dynamics.

Abstract: This article focuses on Israel’s export of medical knowledge to African states during the 1960s. Its aims are twofold. First, to evaluate and discuss the place of medical assistance and health aid within scholarship, examining the relationships between Israel and African states. Second, it will show how a discussion of Israel’s medical and health projects are linked to the regional geopolitics that shape the movement of materials, individuals and knowledge between Africa and the Middle East. By exploring the themes of security and geopolitics, positionality towards Africa, and the movement of knowledge; resources and people this paper unravel how deployment of medical aid and development assistance of health were entwined into the effort to secure Israel’s regional geopolitical objectives to position itself in proximity to different polities in Africa and interchangeably confirmed and challenged Israel’s presence in the continent. Unpacking the place of health and medical knowledge, enables a better understanding of the reciprocal relations between medical knowledge, the spaces this knowledge shapes, and the sites where it is produced.

Abstract: This paper draws on recently declassified papers in Israel, the United States and Britain to reveal the deep divisions between Israel and the United States over Saudi Crown Prince Fahd’s peace plan of August 1981. The United States perceived the seventh clause of the Fahd plan as a significant step forward because it implied that the Saudis could recognize Israel under certain conditions, yet Israel forcefully rejected the plan. The Begin government was concerned that the Reagan administration’s growing support for the Fahd plan presaged US abandonment of the Camp David process. Moreover, the tensions on this issue were significant since Israel feared that Washington would pursue closer strategic ties with the Saudis at the expense of its own special relationship with the United States. The Fahd initiative encouraged the Reagan administration in its aspiration to bring the Saudis into the Middle East peace process. The Begin government manipulated and misled the Israeli public in its insistence that the Saudis were seeking Israel’s destruction, when Riyadh appeared to be signalling its readiness to open a new chapter with the Jewish State. An early opportunity for potential cooperation between Israel and Saudi Arabia was therefore wasted.

Abstract: This article investigates the effects of the United States’ recognition both of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and of the Israeli annexation of the Golan Heights on the international norm against territorial expansion by force. We conclude that these moves — in 2017 and 2019, respectively — did not weaken the norm. Our findings are important for the Arab-Israeli conflict itself as well as for the broader question of the strength of international norms in the face of great power’s partial withdrawal from them.

Abstract: The Cold War between the USA and the USSR, which lasted from the late 1940s to the late 1980s, bore a contingent relation to the bilateral relations between the US government and the State of Israel, which was established in 1948. Until Richard Nixon became US president in 1969, US leaders often displayed a concern that excessive support for Israel might alienate Arab states and facilitate Soviet ambitions in the Middle East. However, Americans in the political center-left evinced a strong concern to combat antisemitism from the 1940s onward, and this priority consistently underwrote US political support for Israel. Judeophobia declined sharply in American society after 1945, but liberal (in the American meaning) culture retained a powerful determination to expose and combat Jew-hatred, which appeared a leading form of bigotry and a measure of society’s lingering susceptibility to fascist appeals. Those on the center-left saw support for the Jewish state as a moral imperative in this context and were the most passionately pro-Israel figures in American life during this era, especially in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. After the Middle East War of 1973, some American Jewish organizations began to argue that severe criticism of Israel—over its occupation of territories conquered in 1967, its treatment of the Palestinians, or anything else—was a “new antisemitism.” This implied that support for Israel continued to be the major test of one’s opposition to this form of hatred.

Abstract: How can ‘small’ and politically peripheral states have a significant impact on issues dominated by big states? For example, how did Norway come to play such an important role in fostering negotiations between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in the early 1990s? This article seeks to answer these questions by analyzing Norway's relationship with Israel and the PLO from 1948 until 1993, as well as Norway's role during the negotiations that led to the signing of the first Oslo Accord. Seen through the theoretical framework of small-state mediation, Norway's lack of influence might have helped convince the parties to open dialogue, but it also implied an inability to provide a level playing field for just negotiations.

Abstract: Although previous studies have separately discussed the Oslo Accords and Israel–Africa relations, there has been little discussion of how and why relations between Israel and African countries evolved during the Oslo process and after its collapse. This article addresses these gaps, arguing that although the Oslo Accords did contribute to the establishment of diplomatic relations with many African countries, the contribution was minor and short-lived, and that common and national interests were more central motivations. It describes the complex nature of more recent developments in Israel-African relations and raises questions about the quality and consequences of bilateral relationships rooted mainly in national and common interests.

Abstract: Since its establishment in 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been openly and vociferously committed to the destruction of the State of Israel. To thwart this genocidal goal – especially the lethal threat of Tehran’s dogged quest for nuclear weapons – Israel has heavily relied on the United States, its longstanding, foremost international ally. Over the past two decades, as its relations with China have greatly expanded, Israel has also sought to harness Beijing’s close and multifaceted ties with Tehran to the fight against a nuclear Iran – to no avail. With the burgeoning Israeli-Chinese relationship stirring recurrent frictions with Washington, especially due to the latter’s alarm over Beijing’s involvement in key infrastructure and hi-tech projects in Israel, Jerusalem has been forced to walk a tight rope between the two rival superpowers so as to maintain their maximum support without alienating either of them. This dilemma was resolved overnight after the invasion of southern Israel by the Iranian-backed Hamas terrorist organization (on 7 October 2023) and its massacre of some 1500 Israelis (fifteen times the 9/11 death toll in relative terms). With Beijing quickly siding with the Palestinians (and Iran), and President Biden throwing the US’ full support behind Israel, warning Tehran and its proxies off intervention and sending a large naval force to the eastern Mediterranean, it has transpired beyond shadow of a doubt who Israel’s real friend is and where its interests lie.

Abstract: Unlike previous studies in the field of foreign aid and political interests, which have focused primarily on the United States’s attempt to gain political support at the United Nations (UN) through foreign aid, this article focuses on the correlation between the foreign aid provided by Israel to seven African countries and those countries’ voting patterns in the UN with regard to Israel affairs. This research argues that foreign aid is a key instrument in Israel’s effort to strengthen its ties in Africa. Its findings highlight a positive correlation between foreign aid and political support, as expressed by African countries’ voting patterns at the UN.

Abstract: Even before normalization—in December 2020, under the auspices of the United States—Israel and Morocco had had “normal” relations for 2,500 years. Morocco has always been a homeland for the Jews, but also a sacred place where many of their saints are buried. Muslims and Jews have lived in Morocco for centuries in peace, mutual respect, and care. This mutual understanding of the past, with its rich cultural heritage, translates today into a friendship without equal. Morocco and Israel are moving into the future hand in hand to write new chapters of understanding, harmony, and human development.

Abstract: In the wake of the October 1973 war, Moscow sought superpower collaboration that would ensure its participation in the nascent Arab-Israel peace process, but the direct Israeli-Egyptian negotiations that culminated in the September 1978 Camp David Accords foiled this plan. As a result, the Soviets launched a diplomatic offensive against the deal and tried to forge an Arab front to isolate Egypt, only to see Cairo and Jerusalem signing a fully fledged peace treaty in March 1979. Then came the Iran–Iraq war (1980–88) and further shattered Moscow’s Middle Eastern stance as fears of Tehran’s hegemonic designs led to Egypt’s reincorporation into the Arab fold.

Abstract: While there has been a growing interest in Israel and Taiwan in intensifying the relationship between the two states and peoples, little heed is being paid by the research literature, which remains scarce and scattered across disciplines (and languages). By way of filling this lacuna, this article offers the first comprehensive overview of the existing Israel-Taiwan literature while illustrating the room for further theory and policy-oriented research and making recommendations as to how to further develop the study area.

Abstract: In May 1968, Iran and Israel’s national football teams met in the final match of that year’s Asian Cup. While for the Israelis it was a confrontation in the sports arena, the Iranians saw the game differently: “The general public treats the event as a [national] confrontation, and in its mind are blended elements of a test of force between a Muslim country and Israel,” reported the Israeli delegation in Tehran to Jerusalem.1 The purpose of the present study is to examine how processes within the inner Iranian arena (the covert level—the competition on the pitch) were expressed in the final game of the Asian Cup (1968) between the teams of Iran and Israel, and how the confrontation on the turf (the overt level—the social arena) affected relations between the two countries and the local population’s attitude toward the Jewish minority in Iran.

Abstract: "At the turn of the millennium, Middle Eastern and Muslim Germans had rather unexpectedly become central to the country's Holocaust memory culture--not as welcome participants, but as targets for re-education and reform. Since then, Turkish- and Arab-Germans have been considered as the prime obstacles to German national reconciliation with its Nazi past, a status shared to a lesser degree by Germans from the formerly socialist East Germany. It is for this reason that the German government, German NGOs, and Muslim minority groups have begun to design Holocaust education and anti-Semitism prevention programs specifically tailored for Muslim immigrants and refugees, so that they, too, can learn the lessons of the Holocaust and embrace Germany's most important postwar democratic political values. Based on ethnographic research conducted over a decade, Subcontractors of Guilt explores when, how, and why Muslim Germans have moved to the center of Holocaust memory discussions. Esra Özyürek argues that German society "subcontracts" guilt of the Holocaust to new minority immigrant arrivals, with the false promise of this process leading to inclusion into the German social contract and equality with other members of postwar German society. By focusing on the recently formed but already sizable sector of Muslim-only anti-Semitism and Holocaust education programs, this book explores the paradoxes of postwar German national identity"--

Abstract: "How did exiled musicians from Germany and Austria, who reached safety at Kitchener Camp in Britain, find themselves in an Australian internment camp in New South Wales in 1940? What were the institutions that helped Jewish refugee musicians survive in wartime Shanghai? What happened to Austrian musicians who were trapped in the Netherlands after the German occupation? These and other questions, and the larger stories they refer to, form the compelling content of this book. Other topics include the struggle of the Vienna operetta composers Granichstaedten and Katscher in USA, the relationship of émigré composer Berthold Goldschmidt to his native Hamburg and the reception of his 'exile opera' Beatrice Cenci. Studies of Mischa Spoliansky's music for the movie Mr. Emmanuel (1944) and Franz Reizenstein's radio opera Anna Kraus form part of the fourteen essays on exile musical history in Britain, Europe, USA, Australia and the Far East, based on cutting edge archival research and interviews by leading scholars"--

Abstract: Klappentext: "Appreciating the power of language, and how discriminatory words can have deadly consequences, is pivotal to our understanding of the Holocaust. Engaging with a wealth of primary sources and significant Holocaust scholarship, Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust traces the historical tradition of anti-Semitism to explore this in detail. From religious anti-Semitism in ancient Rome to racially-led anti-Semites focused on building superior nation-states in 19th-century Europe to Hitler's vitriolic attacks, Griech-Polelle analyzes how tropes and stereotypes incited suspicion, dislike and hatred of the Jews - and, ultimately, how this was used to drive anti-Semitic feeling toward genocide. Crucially, this 2nd edition sheds further light on the everyday experience of ordinary Germans and Jews under the Nazi regime, with new chapters examining the role of the Christian Churches in Hitler's persecution of the Jews and those who participated in rescue work and resistance more broadly. With new illustrations, a detailed glossary and up-to-date further reading suggestions and questions, this 2nd edition provides a concise and lucid survey of European Jewry, the Holocaust, and the language of anti-Semitism"--

Abstract: "For the sixty thousand German Jews who escaped Nazi Germany and found refuge in Mandate Palestine between 1933 and 1941, migration meant radical changes: it transformed their professional and cultural lives and confronted them with a new language, climate, and society. Bridging German-Jewish and Israeli history, this book tells the story of German-Jewish migration to Mandate Palestine/Eretz Israel as gender history. It argues that this migration was shaped and structured by gendered policies and ideologies and experienced by men and women in a gendered form - from the decision to immigrate and the anticipation of change, through the outcomes for family life, body, self-image, and sexuality. Immigration led to immediate transformations in allocations of tasks within the family, concepts of masculinity and femininity, and participation in the labor market and domestic life. Through a close examination of archival materials in German, English, and Hebrew, including administrative records, personal documents, newspapers, and oral history interviews conducted by the author, this book follows Jewish migrants along their journeys from Germany and into the workplaces, living rooms, and kitchens of their new homeland, providing a new perspective on everyday life in Mandate Palestine. Viola Alianov-Rautenberg's work illuminates key issues at the intersection of migration studies, German-Jewish studies, and Israeli history, demonstrating how the lens of gender enriches our understanding of social change, power, ethnicity, and nation-building"--

Abstract: "The true story of a vigilante group of Holocaust survivors who conspired to kill six million Germans, Nakam (Hebrew for "vengeance") tells the story of "the Avengers" (Nokmim), a group of young Holocaust survivors led by poet and resistance fighter Abba Kovner, who undertook a mission of revenge against Germany following the crimes of the Holocaust. Motivated by both the atrocities they had endured and the realization that murderous antisemitic attacks on survivors continued long after the Nazi surrender, these fifty young men and women sought retaliation at a level commensurate with the devastation caused by the Holocaust, making clear to the world that Jewish blood would no longer be shed with impunity. Had they been successful, they would have poisoned city water supplies and loaves of bread distributed to German POWs, with the aim of killing six million Germans. Kovner and his followers went to great lengths to carry out their plans, going so far as to obtain the plans for Nuremberg's municipal water system, secure large quantities of poison, infiltrate a POW camp and the bakery that supplied it, and distribute poisoned bread to prisoners - but their plots were ultimately stymied. Most of the members of Nakam eventually returned to Israel, where for decades many of them refused to speak publicly about their roles in the group. While the Avengers' story began to come to light in the 1980s, details of the relations between the group and Zionist leadership and the motivations of its members have remained unknown. Drawing on rich archival sources and in-depth interviews with the Avengers in their later years, historian Dina Porat examines the formation of the group and the clash between the formative humanistic values held by its members and their unrealized plans for violent retribution"--

Abstract: "To be seen" widmete sich den Geschichten von LGBTIQ* in Deutschland in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Abstract: "Drawing on twelve years of research in dozens of archives in Austria, Germany, Israel, and the United States, this book tells the story of five Jewish people--a merchant, a homemaker, a real estate broker, and two teenagers--who bravely resisted persecution and defended themselves in Nazi Germany. These stories have not been told until now, and each case is one of many, as Gruner shows by resurfacing similar accounts of Jewish refusal to accept persecution and violence in Germany and Austria between 1933 and 1943, upending the notion of passive Jews and expanding the concept of resistance. Each individual described here represents a category of resistance: written opposition, oral protest, contesting Nazi propaganda, defiance of anti-Jewish laws and measures, and self-defense against physical attacks. Many of these courageous acts resulted in the resisters being prosecuted and put on trial, and often receiving harsh punishments, while some led to acquittal by courts and others to changes in Nazi policies. Taken together, these accounts reframe our understanding of German Jewish attitudes during the Holocaust, while also providing an astonishing examination of the complex Nazi reactions to the many individual acts of Jewish resistance."--Dust jacket

Abstract: This article examines relations between the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the State of Israel from the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962 to 2020. It analyses the internal and external factors influencing their foreign and security policies as well as mutual misunderstandings and the attendant problems, notably the failure to sign a free trade agreement till 2020. Despite these difficulties, and the geostrategic complexity of the Middle East, especially the Persian Gulf, that influences Seoul’s interests in the region and its relations with Israel, the bilateral relationship will further improve once the free trade agreement is ratified by both states.

Abstract: With decades of multilayered close cooperation transformed into outright hostility, Iran and Israel have been trying to strengthen their strategic posture vis-à-vis each other: Israel by attacking Iranian-related targets in Syria and befriending Arab countries; Iran by supporting armed militias and terror organisations and pursuing a nuclear weapons programme. While neither state seems interested in military confrontation, miscalculations can never be fully excluded.

Abstract: The article lays a foundation for understanding the principal objectives of the Yishuv’s foreign policy and its actualization. Highlighting the many figures who had no defined diplomatic roles but were influential in establishing foreign policy goals shows how foreign policy was essential to the political, economic and social well-being of the yet to be born state and how it laid the historical foundations of Israel’s intractable problem, the resolution of the conflict with Arab states and the Palestinians.

Abstract: In 1933, as Hitler came to power, schoolteacher Anna Essinger hatched a daring and courageous plan: to smuggle her entire school out of Nazi Germany. Anna had read Mein Kampf and knew the terrible danger that Hitler's hate-fueled ideologies posed to her pupils. She knew that to protect them she had to get her pupils to the safety of England. But the safe haven that Anna struggled to create in a rundown manor house in Kent would test her to the limit. As the news from Europe continued to darken, Anna rescued successive waves of fleeing children and, when war broke out, she and her pupils faced a second exodus. One by one countries fell to the Nazis and before long unspeakable rumors began to circulate. Red Cross messages stopped and parents in occupied Europe vanished. In time, Anna would take in orphans who had given up all hope; the survivors of unimaginable horrors. Anna's school offered these scarred children the love and security they needed to rebuild their lives, showing them that, despite everything, there was still a world worth fighting for.Featuring moving first-hand testimony, and drawn from letters, diaries and present-day interviews, The School That Escaped the Nazis is a dramatic human tale that offers a unique child's-eye perspective on Nazi persecution and the Holocaust. It is also the story of one woman's refusal to allow her beliefs in a better, more equitable world to be overtaken by the evil that surrounded her

Abstract: "In 1935, Adolf Hitler declared Munich the "Capital of the Movement." It was here that he developed his anti-Semitic beliefs and founded the Nazi party. Though Hitler's immediate milieu during the 1910s and 1920s has received ample attention, this book argues that the Munich of this period is worthy of study in its own right and that the changes the city underwent between 1918 and 1923 are absolutely crucial for understanding the rise of antisemitism and eventually Nazism in Germany. Before 1918, Munich had a decidedly cosmopolitan flavor, but its open atmosphere was shattered by the November Revolution of 1918-19. Jews were prominently represented among many of the European revolutions of the late 1910s and early 1920s, but nowhere did Jewish revolutionaries and government representatives appear in such high numbers as in Munich. The link between Jews and communist revolutionaries was especially strong in the minds of the city's residents. In the aftermath of the revolution and the short-lived Socialist regime that followed, the Jews of Munich experienced a massive backlash. The book unearths the story of Munich as ground zero for the racist and reactionary German Right, revealing how this came about and what it meant for those who lived through it"--

Abstract: Throughout the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, the Zionist movement and Israel had the upper hand and time seems to work in Israel’s favor in terms of territorial gains, which come at the expense of the Palestinians and leave the conflict unresolved. This chapter examines Israel’s goals and strategies, the influence of public opinion and the central role of the military and militarism in shaping the process. Israel’s all but absolute military, economic, political and strategic superiority enabled it to forgo negotiations and adopt a strategy of issuing dictates, yielding good returns for the Israeli side but a loss of hope and collapse of trust in potential for resolution on the Palestinian side. Mediation attempts have failed, as mediators were perceived biased, the Palestinians perceived the American administration as supporting Israel while Israel perceived the Europeans as supporting the Palestinians. Consequently, a quarter of a century has passed since the Oslo Accords were signed, and the conflict continues without any progress toward a resolution.

Abstract: The Arab world’s relations with Israel have undergone a sweeping transformation during the 70 years of the Jewish state’s existence. The Arab states started out from a position of hatred and hostility, and even more, of refusal to accept Israel as a legitimate entity in the Middle East. At least some of them then moved to a position of acceptance of Israel and a readiness to coexist peacefully, and finally, to the establishment of cooperative relations almost up to the point of concluding a strategic security alliance. This last change of position came about in the shadow of and perhaps under the influence of Israel’s growing regional and international status and, of course, its increasing economic and military strength, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the weakening of the Arab world and the Arab states’ withdrawal into themselves in face of the social and economic problems confronting them. Nevertheless, the recent developments in Israeli–Arab relations have not been accompanied by any breakthrough in Israeli–Palestinian relations. This being so, the question remains whether the reconciliation process between Israel and its Arab neighbors might not turn out to be reversible.

Abstract: This chapter outlines the major historical developments in the US–Israeli relationship. It also describes and analyzes the core foundations of the relationship: shared strategic interests, Israel’s resonance in American political culture and the role played by the pro-Israel lobby in domestic American politics. Another factor that influences the quality of the US–Israeli relationship is the policies pursued by Israel and its neighbors regarding US interests in the region. Each of these factors has a major effect on the relationship but none alone explains American support for Israel. Cultural resonance undergirds the relationship generating a predisposition to support Israel, while most of the major upgrades of the strategic relationship were driven primarily by a strategic rationale. The pro-Israel lobby has preserved the preferential treatment that Israel receives. It is rarely the driving force behind major upgrades in the relationship, but it does make it more difficult to downgrade the relationship by raising the political price of confronting Israel. The main challenge to the special relationship is the increased willingness among Democrats to condition many of the benefits Israel receives on Israeli support for the peace process.

Abstract: Israeli–European Union (EU) relations have consisted of several conflicting trends that have resulted in the emergence of a highly problematic and volatile relationship: one characterized by a strong and ever-increasing network of economic, cultural and personal ties, yet marked at the political level by disappointment, bitterness and anger. On the one hand, Israel has displayed a genuine desire to strengthen its ties with the EU and to be included as part of the European integration project. On the other hand, Israelis are deeply suspicious of the Union’s policies and are untrusting of the EU’s intentions toward the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and the Middle East as a whole. As a result, Israel has been determined to minimize the EU’s role in the Middle East Peace Process and to deny it any direct involvement in the negotiations with the Palestinians. At the same time, the EU displays an equally ambivalent attitude concerning the nature of its ties with Israel. This chapter summarizes key developments in Israeli–European Community/EU relations from 1957 to 2019.

Abstract: China–Israel cat-and-mouth play began in January 1950 – when Israel became the first Middle Eastern country (and the seventh in the non-Communist world) to recognize China – and is still going on. This play involved three stages. In the first 30 years, the period of no relations, Israel’s attempts to form diplomatic relations were rejected by China, also discouraged by the US, the Soviet Union and the Arab and Muslim countries. China–Israel informal relations began in the late 1979s when Israel began selling upgraded Soviet arms and military technology to China – on behalf of the US. By the late 1980s, the two countries already held occasional meetings at the UN and initial exchanges including unofficial missions. These led to the establishment of official relations in January 1992, thereby introducing the third stage. Since then, Sino–Israeli relations have expanded dramatically, primarily in economics, but also in culture, science and technology. Moreover, relations with China have driven many other Asian countries to form relations with Israel, which tripled within two years. At the same time, Beijing continued to identify with the Arabs and the Palestinians, and the US forced Israel to stop arms sales to China and criticized Israel for accepting Chinese investments, allegedly harmful to US security.

Abstract: The chapter addresses the current state of Israeli–Russian bilateral relations often described as “the golden age.” Experts tend to point to Israel’s economic and security interests as well as its Russian-speaking community as the decisive factors determining the nature of these relations. Promoting close ties with Putin is usually explained by Israel’s need to consolidate its security understanding over southern Syria with Russia, reduce the risk of war and mobilize Russian-speaking citizens to vote for Likud.I argue that these factors, though considered in this relationship, do not determine its nature and specific feature. The current dialogue has been shaped by the neoliberal rationality and political affinities of Russia’s and Israel’s self-serving right-wing populist leaders who reveal the similarities between their political thinking and reasoning, qualities and approaches. Russian–Israeli cooperation in general, and especially in military actions in Syria, reflects the logic of the neoliberal approach to international relations, which integrates ideas and values into the repertoire of goods and services eligible for transactions.Over the last decade, Israeli–Russian relations have been developing in the “manual steering mode” shaped by Netanyahu and Putin’s personal relations while the main interest uniting them is maintaining the political status quo.

Abstract: Based on hitherto untapped documents from the Israeli and Turkish state archives, this article discusses Turkish–Israeli relations during the 1960s. It shows that since the relationship was more important for Israel, Ankara called most of the shots while Israel used its relative advantages, especially in the economic and trade fields, to keep the relations going. Hence, despite intensifying political and economic ties with the Arab world since the mid-1960s, Ankara resisted persistent pressures to downscale, if not end altogether, its relations with Israel, though these took the odd beating in line with the vicissitudes in Turkey’s domestic and international affairs.

Abstract: Ideational change in the self-characterization of a state is bound to have repercussions on its domestic and foreign policy behavior. Consequently, the gradual but radical change that has been ongoing in Turkey in the past two decades has had a wide-ranging impact on the way Turkish foreign policy has been conducted. Whereas survival and protection of territorial integrity as well as a Western orientation were traditionally the main concerns of Turkish policy-makers, under the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) (since 2002), there has been a partial Islamization of Turkish foreign policy especially with regard to liaisons with Israel and Palestine. This shift can be explained by the replacement of the Western Turkish state identity with an Islamic conservative outlook.

Abstract: "Colonialism and the Jews in German History brings together new and path-breaking studies on the historical relationship between colonialism and the Jews in Germany. All these studies testify to the fact that German-Jewish history takes on additional significance if seen as part of a global history of collective relationships."--

Abstract: "This book provides a social and cultural history of Jewish art in Nazi Germany, with a focus on the Jewish artists, art critics, and audiences in Nazi Bavaria. From the time of its conceptualization in the autumn of 1933 until its final curtain call in November 1938, the Jewish Cultural League in Bavaria sustained three departments: music, visual arts, and adult education. The Bavarian example steps outside the highly professional cultural milieu of Jewish Berlin, and instead looks at relatively unknown efforts of Bavarian Jewish artists as they used art to define what it now meant, to them, to be Jewish under Nazism. Insightful and engaging, this book is ideal for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars interested in social and cultural histories of Jews in Germany"--

Abstract: Jewish education in the enlightenment era -- Jewish encounters with the university before emancipation -- Jewish students in the first half of the nineteenth century -- The social situation of Jewish students in the pre-1848 Era -- The professional experience of Jewish university graduates.
Abstract: "For centuries Jews in Germany were denied full rights and excluded from gentile society. At the same time, Jewish law restricted scholarship to exegesis of the Talmud. But from the late seventeenth century onward, as German universities progressively opened their doors to them, many Jews turned toward university studies. This process accelerated around 1800 once education (Bildung) assumed a central role for social ascent among the so-called Bildungsbürgertum (cultural bourgeoisie). Many Jews sought to benefit from the professional and social opportunities that university attendance enabled, but they soon discovered that while the state encouraged education as a means of "moral improvement" of the Jews, it was unwilling to concede them the right to professional careers. Alienated from their ancestral religion and unwilling or unable to return to trading occupations, academized Jews often found themselves leading precarious existences. Many joined the struggle for emancipation or took up the reform of Judaism. Now available in English translation for the first time, Monika Richarz's classic study addresses the far-reaching transformation of German Jewry under the impact of university education. It traces the secularization of Jewish education, the significance of academic education for social assimilation, and the loss of Jewish solidarity with increasing acculturation and emancipation"--

Abstract: "Among the many narratives about the atrocities committed against Jews in the Holocaust, the story about the Jews who lived in the eye of the storm--the German Jews--has received little attention. Germans against Germans: The Fate of the Jews, 1938-1945, tells this story--how Germans declared war against other Germans, that is, against German Jews. Author Moshe Zimmermann explores questions of what made such a war possible? How could such a radical process of exclusion take place in a highly civilized, modern society? What were the societal mechanisms that paved the way for legal discrimination, isolation, deportation, and eventual extermination of the individuals who were previously part and parcel of German society? Germans against Germans demonstrates how the combination of antisemitism, racism, bureaucracy, cynicism, and imposed collaboration culminated in 'the final solution.' "--
