Kurzfassung:
The Augustinian friar Alonso Gudiel of Valladolid was executed in 1573 by the Inquisition for suspected Judaizing and spreading "Marrano" theological ideas. A new form of biblical exegesis developed during the late Renaissance based on philology and growing knowledge of Hebrew writings, together with a more individualistic religiosity. Alonso Gudiel in Spain and his disciple Pedro Mendoza in Naples, as well as other descendants of Conversos, although faithful Catholics, insisted on following modern trends. Their stubbornness was interpreted as a "Jewish" influence. From the end of the 15th century, the Converso, even if sincere, was considered a person inclined towards novelty and a potential heretic, especially more so when in contact with Jews or other Conversos, as in Naples.
