Abstract: From the second half of the nineteenth century through to World War II, Eastern Europe, especially the territories that formerly made up the Pale of Settlement in the Tsarist Empire, witnessed a Jewish cultural flowering that went hand-in-hand with a multifaceted literary productivity in the Hebrew and Yiddish languages. Accompanied and sometimes directly affected by the dramatic political ruptures of the era, many authors experimented with various modernist poetics in the context of a culturally and literarily closely interwoven milieu. This beautifully illustrated catalogue presents for the first time some of the key figures of the era, including in each case a portrait of the author and a close reading of selected texts, including Yosef Ḥayim Brenner, Leah Goldberg, Moyshe Kulbak, and Deborah Vogel. Of particular interest here is the productive entanglement of cultures and literatures, of cultural contact and transfer, and the significance of space and place for the development of modern Jewish literatures.

Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Julia Schneidawind rekonstruiert die Überlieferungsgeschichte deutsch-jüdischer Privatbibliotheken.

Abstract: Der Schwerpunkt dieses Jahrbuchs ist Else Lasker-Schüler gewidmet.

Abstract: Die Kapitel 2 Sam 15-20 handeln von einer Krisenzeit in der Herrschaft Davids. David übersteht all dies: teils in wenig überzeugender, teils in bewundernswerter Manier.

Abstract: "This volume discusses the Iranian influence on Second Temple Judaism. Dobroruka starts his investigation with an overview of the problems posed by a dualistic worldview - he examines the Indo-European origins of Zoroaster and his ideas, the long-term implications for the notion of free-will, as well as clarifying the lightness/darkness paradigm that originated in Persia. Following this, Dobroruka discusses a variety of concepts that illustrate this influence, namely the perspectives on the rewards for the just and the opposing punishments for the wicked, the idea of an 'Anointed One', shamanistic visionary experience, the resurrection, and the concepts of sheol and Paradise"--

Abstract: "In the early years of the 21st century it appeared that the memory of the Holocaust was secure in Western Europe; that, in order to gain entry into the European Union, the countries of Eastern Europe would have to acknowledge their compatriots' complicity in genocide. Fifteen year later, the landscape looks starkly different. Shedding fresh light on these developments, The Perversion of Holocaust Memory explores the politicization and distortion of Holocaust remembrance since 1989. This innovative book opens with an analysis of events across Europe which buttressed confidence in the stability of Holocaust memory and brought home the full extent of nations' participation in the Final Solution. And yet, as Judith M. Hughes reveals in later chapters, mainstream accountability began to crumble as the 21st century progressed: German and Jewish suffering was equated; anti-Semitic rhetoric re-entered contemporary discourse; populist leaders side-stepped inconvenient facts; and, more recently with the revival of ethno-nationalism, Holocaust remembrance has been caught in the backlash of the European refugee crisis. The four countries analyzed here -- France, Germany, Hungary, and Poland -- could all claim to be victims of Nazi Germany, the Allies or the Communist Soviet Union but they were also all perpetrators. Ultimately, it is this complex legacy which Hughes adroitly untangles in her sophisticated study of Holocaust memory in modern Europe."--

Abstract: "In this study of the Aramaic materials at Qumran, Andrew B. Perrin examines the Aramaic Levi Document, Words of Qahat, and Visions of Amram, showing how they exhibit a concentration of priestly concerns and knowledge and exploring new models for evaluating their potential textual or traditional connections. Horizons of Ancestral Inheritance includes a new transcription, critical notes, and translation of the Aramaic Levi, Qahat, and Amram fragments among the Dead Sea Scrolls based upon the latest digital images. These are paired with a comprehensive commentary on the conceptual elements, codicological features, and cultural contexts of the materials. The volume concludes with a fresh synthesis regarding the textual formation of these Aramaic, priestly pseudepigrapha as a "constellation" of texts within a larger world or scribal-priestly activity and traditions. The Aramaic texts among the Dead Sea Scrolls are among the most understudied items in the Qumran collection. With open questions around their origins, transmission, and reception in and beyond the Second Temple period, these writings provide both new materials and fresh insight into the thought, identity, and practice of ancient Judaism"--

Abstract: "How did the Israeli military learn to cope with the ubiquity of media technologies that routinely documented their power abuses? How did they re-appropriate these to tighten their grip on Palestine? This book explains why a high-tech nation with advanced military technologies came to rely on the everyday media habits performed by soldiers and civilians. Daniel Mann argues that the intensification of the security regime in Palestine, and the increasingly personal use of media technologies by both soldiers and civilians, are deeply entangled. The book traces how, beginning in the 1990s, the integration of media into the lives of civilians and Israeli soldiers enabled Israel to transfer responsibilities to individual users, who in turn became legally and ethically liable for state abuses of power. Drawing on declassified documents, found footage, and social media, Mann shows how both media and warfare have been remodelled around the figure of the defensive, isolated, and insular 'individual'. Mann suggests that the focus on representations and their close visual analysis paradoxically hinders our ability to understand media. Instead of zooming into fine details, we must step back to reveal the assemblage of images, users, and infrastructure that together serve to maintain the racial, legal and aesthetic divide between Israel and Palestine"--

Chassid explizierte. Sämtliche Texte wurden sorgfältig eingeleitet und annotiert

Abstract: Mit seinem Buch verfolgt Manfred Tiemann drei Ziele:Einerseits möchte der Autor an 20 Themenfeldern konkrete Hinweise zu Bibelfilmen für unterschiedliche Interpretationsmöglichkeiten anbieten, z.B.

Abstract: "From the emergence of department stores in the late 19th century to the financial disasters of the years following the end of World War I, the history of large-scale retailing in Germany was dominated by a pioneering generation of German-Jewish entrepreneurs who found fortune and influence only to have their livelihoods taken by Hitler and the Nazis in the 1930s. Drawing on a range of archival sources and private collections, The Kaiser, Hitler and the Jewish Department Store reveals how, contrary to Nazi claims, Jewish-owned department stores were decent employers, popular with customers, and well integrated into the economy. In fact, such institutions were so integral to German society that, when Hitler came to power in 1933, the Nazis were forced to abandon their pledge to abolish them. As this revelatory history argues, the end of the Jewish-run store cannot solely be attributed to the rise of antisemitism: it was also the consequence of financial mismanagement and the indifference of the German people. John F. Mueller reveals the German-Jewish department store as a powerful force in society and politics as well as a leader in architecture and design. His book challenges common assumptions about the relationship between consumer culture, the German-Jewish business community and the rise of Nazism, providing fresh insights into the social history of modern Germany."--

Abstract: "Hundreds of Israeli soldiers, called up to take part in controversial campaigns like the 1982 invasion of Lebanon or policing duties in the Palestinian territories today, have refused orders. Many of these 'refuseniks' have faced prison sentences rather than take part in what they regard as an unjust occupation in defence of illegal Jewish settlements." "In this book, Peretz Kidron, himself a refusenik, gives us the stories, experiences, viewpoints, even poetry, of these courageous conscripts who believe in their country, but not in its actions beyond its borders." "We read about the cautious, even embarrassed, response of the authorities. And we see the wider implications of the philosophy of selective refusal - which is not the same thing as pacifism - for conscientious citizens in every country where conscription still exists. Here is a real model for the peace movement in Israel and worldwide."--Jacket

Abstract: In this unique new contribution, Marcelo Svirsky asserts that no political solution currently on offer can provide the cultural marrow necessary to effect a transformation of modes of being and ways of life in the State of Israel. Controversially, Svirsky argues that the Zionist political project cannot be fixed - it is one that negatively affects the lives of its beneficiaries as well as of its victims. Instead, the book aims to generate a reflective attitude, allowing Jewish-Israelis to explore how they may divest themselves of Zionist identities by engaging with dissident rationalities, practices and institutions. Ultimately, the production of military hardware and technology that helps Israel control the lives of Palestinians, of separate policies, laws and spaces for Jews and Palestinians, are all linked with the production of Zionist subjectivities and modes of being. Overcoming these modes of being is to after Israel

Abstract: "With the upsurge in violence that came with the outbreak of the Second Intifada in the early 2000s, a new wave of documentaries emerged that centered on Palestinian and Mizrahim experiences of pain and oppression under Israeli occupation and the mainstream Israeli-dominated public realm. This book explores how Palestinians and Mizrahim perform this entangled experience of oppression on screen. Analysing key documentary films from the era of the Second Intifada, Shirly Bahar offers a nuanced reading of the cinematic corpus emerging from Israel and Palestine, as well as the nature of Zionist policy over the lived experience of Palestinian and Mizrahim citizens of the Israeli state and its occupied territories."--

Abstract: "The thousands uprooted and displaced by the Holocaust had a profound cultural impact on the countries in which they sought refuge, with numerous Holocaust escapees attaining prominence as scientists, writers, filmmakers and artists. But what is less well known is the way in which this refugee diaspora shaped the scholarly culture of their new-found homes and international policy. In this unique work, David Simon explores the pioneering role played by mostly Jewish refugee scholars in the creation of development studies and practice following the Second World War, and what we can learn about the discipline by examining the social and intellectual history of its early practitioners. Through in-depth interviews with key figures and their relatives, Simon considers how the escapees' experiences impacted their scholarship, showing how they played a key role in shaping their belief that 'development' really did hold the potential to make a better world, free from the horrors of war, genocide and discrimination they had experienced under Nazi rule. In the process, he casts valuable new light on the origins and evolution of development studies, policy and practice from this formative postwar period to the present."--

In the USA, Europe and elsewhere, Jewish organisations have sprung up to oppose Israel's treatment of Palestinians, facing harsh criticism from fellow Jews for their actions. Jewish Identity and Palestinian Rights is a groundbreaking study of this vital and growing worldwide social movement

Abstract: "This book examines community identity in the post-exilic temple community in Ezra-Nehemiah, and explores the possible influences that the Achaemenids, the ruling Persian dynasty, might have had on its construction. In the book, David Janzen reads Ezra-Nehemiah in dialogue with the Achaemenids' Old Persian inscriptions, as well as with other media the dynasty used, such as reliefs, seals, coins, architecture, and imperial parks. In addition, he discusses the cultural and religious background of Achaemenid thought, especially its intersections with Zoroastrian beliefs. Ezra-Nehemiah, Janzen argues, accepts Achaemenid claims for the necessity and beneficence of their hegemony. The result is that Ezra-Nehemiah, like the imperial ideology it mimics, claims that divine and royal wills are entirely aligned. Ezra-Nehemiah reflects the Achaemenid assertion that the peoples they have colonized are incapable of living in peace and happiness without the Persian rule that God established to benefit humanity, and that the dynasty rewards the peoples who do what they desire, since that reflects divine desire. The final chapter of the book argues that Ezra-Nehemiah was produced by an elite group within the Persian-period temple assembly, and shows that Ezra-Nehemiah's pro-Achaemenid worldview was not widely accepted within that community."--

Abstract: "What, according to the Book of Amos, does it mean to be the people of God? In this book, Andrew M. King employs a Social Identity Approach (SIA), comprised of Social Identity Theory and Self-Categorization Theory, to explore the relationship between identity formation and the biblical text. Specifically, he examines the identity-forming strategies embedded in the Book of Amos. King begins by outlining the Social Identity Approach, especially its use in Hebrew Bible scholarship. Turning to the Book of Amos, he analyzes group dynamics and intergroup conflicts (national and interpersonal), as well as Amos's presentation of Israel's history and Israel's future. King provides extensive insight into the rhetorical strategies in Amos that shape the trans-temporal audience's sense of self. To live as the people of God, according to Amos, readers and hearers must adopt norms defined by a proper relationship to God that results in the proper treatment of others."--

Abstract: "In 1993 luminaries from around the world signed the Oslo accords, a pledge to achieve lasting peace in the Holy Land. Yet, with over a thousand Israelis and nearly four times that number of Palestinians killed since 2000, the Oslo process is now considered "history"." "Impossible Peace provides one of the first comprehensive analyses of that history. Mark LeVine argues that Oslo was never going to bring peace or justice to Palestinians or Israelis. He claims that the accords collapsed not because of a failure to live up to the agreements, but precisely because of the terms and underlying ideologies of those agreements." Abstract: "Drawing on unprecedented access to the video archives of B'Tselem, an Israeli NGO that distributes cameras to Palestinians living in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, Liat Berdugo lays out an argument for a visual studies approach to videographic evidence in Israel/Palestine. Using video stills as core material, it discusses the politics of videographic evidence in Israel/Palestine by demonstrating that the conflict is one that has produced an inequality of visual rights. The book highlights visual surveillance and counter surveillance at the citizen level, how Palestinians originally filmed to ?shoot back? at Israelis, who were armed with shooting power via weapons as the occupying force. It also traces how Israeli private citizens began filming back at Palestinians with their own cameras, including personal cell phone cameras, thus creating a simultaneous, echoing counter surveillance. Complicating the notion that visual evidence alone can secure justice, the Weaponized Camera in The Middle East asks how what is seen, but also who is seeing, affects how conflicts are visually recorded. Drawing on over 5,000 hours of footage, only a fraction of which is easily accessible to the public domain, this book offers a unique perspective on the strategies and battlegrounds of the Israel/Palestine conflict."--

Abstract: "Male circumcision is a powerful site through which questions of gender, race, religion, sexuality and psyche have been negotiated throughout human history. In recent years, a global movement of 'intactivists' have fuelled heated debate internationally around their demand to keep penises 'intact'. While most contemporary work on the subject has preoccupied itself with whether circumcision is 'right' or 'wrong', 'safe' or 'harmful', this study proceeds from the premise that, whatever its medical consequences, the significance of male circumcision lies in realms beyond the purely organic. How can psychoanalysis help us shed light on the ideologies, discourses and fantasies surrounding the practice and the impassioned stances for and against it? And how might the history of circumcision, in turn, allow us to re-assess and clarify how we understand the 'split' (or 'snipped') subject of psychoanalysis?."--

Abstract: "In the years before, during, and after the First World War, hundreds of young Jews flocked to Paris, artistic capital of the world and center of modernist experimentation. Some arrived with prior training from art academies in Kraków, Vilna, and Vitebsk; others came armed only with hope and a few memorized phrases in French. They had little Jewish tradition in painting and sculpture to draw on, yet despite these obstacles, these young Jews produced the greatest efflorescence of art in the long history of the Jewish people. The paintings of Marc Chagall, Amedeo Modigliani, Chaim Soutine, Sonia Delaunay-Terk, and Emmanuel Mané-Katz, the sculptures of Jacques Lipchitz, Ossip Zadkine, Chana Orloff, and works by many other artists now grace the world's museums. As the École de Paris was the most cosmopolitan artistic movement the world had seen, the left-bank neighborhood of Montparnasse became a meeting place for diverse cultures. How did the tolerant, Bohemian atmosphere of Montparnasse encourage an international style of art in an era of bellicose nationalism, not to mention racism and antisemitism? How did immigrants not only absorb but profoundly influence a culture? This book examines how the clash of cultures produced genius."--

Abstract: Academic freedom is under siege, as our universities become the sites of increasingly fraught battles over freedom of speech. While much of the public debate has focussed on 'no platforming' by students, this overlooks the far graver threat posed by concerted efforts to silence the critical voices of both academics and students, through the use of bureaucracy, legal threats and online harassment. Such tactics have conspicuously been used, with particularly virulent effect, in an attempt to silence academic criticism of Israel. This collection uses the controversies surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a means of exploring the limits placed on academic freedom in a variety of different national contexts. It looks at how the increased neoliberalisation of higher education has shaped the current climate, and considers how academics and their universities should respond to these new threats. Bringing together new and established scholars from Palestine and the wider Middle East as well as the US and Europe, Enforcing Silence shows us how we can and must defend our universities as places for critical thinking and free expression

Abstract: "Enmity between individuals was an ubiquitious phenomenon in the ancient world. Using the method of legal anthropology this book examines patterns of hate-driven feuding in kinship-based and segmentary societies and applies these insights to biblical law. It defines the fundamental categories of enmity, love, revenge, honor and shame in the context of feuding and it illustrates certain legal actions, such giving false witness, and shows how they are expressions of hateful relationships. Adam proposes that we should understand hate between individuals as a legal construct that becomes visible when lived out as private enmity, a social status that exhibits distinct hallmarks. In kinship-based societies, private hate/enmity was publicly declared and, consequently, was publicly known in one' own kin and beyond. Private enmity was acted out in feud-like patterns, with a flexibility that allowed opponents to choose between various measures to hurt their opponent. Acting out hate was reciprocal, and it typically escalated and swiftly expanded into one party' attempt to kill the other and to trigger a blood feud. Finally, private enmity was "transitive" in the sense that opponents at enmity naturally expected solidarity from kin and friends. Adam uses textual analysis to illustrate how the legal construct of hate informs biblical law from the Covenant Code, to Deuteronomic and Priestly Legislation, including the Holiness Code. He also demonstrates how hate forms the backdrop of conflict settlement. Ultimately, by ways of tracing back through the category of private hate and enmity, this book unpacks the meaning of the quintessential command to 'Love your neighbor!'"--

Abstract: "Nathan Lovell proposes that 1 and 2 Kings might be read as a work of written history, produced with the explicit purpose of shaping the communal identity of its first readers in the Babylonian exile. By drawing on sociological approaches to the role historiography plays in the construction of political identity, Lovell argues the book of Kings is intended to reconstruct a sense of Israelite identity in the context of these losses, and that the book of Kings moves beyond providing a reason for the exile in Israel's history, and beyond even connecting its exilic audience to that history. The book recalls the past in order to demonstrate what it means to be Israel in the (exilic) present, and to encourage hope for the Israelite nation in the future. After developing a reading strategy for 1:2 Kings that treats the book as a coherent narrative, Lovell examines the construction of Israelite identity within Kings under the headings of covenant, nationhood, land, and rule. In each case he suggests that the narrative of the book creates room for a genuine but temporary expression of Israelite identity in exile: genuine to show that it remains possible for Israel to be Yahweh's people during the exile, but temporary to encourage hope for a future restoration."--

Abstract: "Food and feasting are key themes in the Hebrew Bible and the culture it represents, and the archaeology of the lands of the Bible now provides information about ancient foodways. In this handbook scholars draw on a multitude of disciplines to offer an overview of the study of food in the Hebrew Bible and ancient Israel. The contributors examine not only the textual materials of the Hebrew Bible and related epigraphic works, but also engage in a wider archaeological, environmental, and historical understanding of ancient Israel as it pertains to food. The volume is divided into five parts examining aspects of food and food production in the Hebrew Bible and ancient Israel. Environmental and socio-economic issues such as climate and trade are considered along with the production of raw materials and the technology of harvesting and food processing. The cultural role of food and meals in festivals, holidays, and biblical regulations is also discussed, as is the way food and drink are treated in biblical texts, in related epigraphic materials, and in iconography."--

Abstract: "The 'discovery' the Cairo Genizah has transformed Judaic Studies and our understanding of the Medieval Middle East more broadly. However, the complete story of how over a quarter of a million Hebrew manuscript fragments were discovered in 19th century Egypt and reassembled in collections around the world is far more convoluted and compelling than previously told. A little-known, forgotten or ignored cast of scholars, librarians, archaeologists, excavators, collectors, dealers and agents, all acting with varying motivations and intentions, utilized hidden networks and created alliances to find, disperse and redistribute these materials. Based on a wealth of archival materials, this book will take the reader on barge boats along the Nile, down into ancient caves and tombs, under medieval rubbish mounds, into hidden attic rooms and basements, along labyrinthine souks, and behind the doors of private club rooms, cloistered colleges and enemy alien internment camps. The journey will prove that provenance matters and that inaccurate, incomplete or simply untrue attributions have serious implications for scholarship. Readers will learn new information about the history of the Cairo Genizah; they will learn more about the Egyptian antiquities trade in the 19th and 20th century; they will gain further insights into late 19th and early 20th century manuscript collecting and archive building; and they will read about the importance of provenance research and the effect on scholarship when provenance is misleading or simply unknown."--

Abstract: This study examines the origins of two incisive processes: the transformation of post-war Germany from a National Socialist Volksgemeinschaft to a liberal democracy and the ideological genesis of the Cold War. Its central objects of study are five German emigrants: the political theorist and Protestant Carl J. Friedrich, the Socialist political scientist Ernst Fraenkel, the Catholic publicist Waldemar Gurian, the liberal lawyer Karl Loewenstein, and finally Hans Morgenthau, a political scientist, lawyer, and theoretician in the field of international relations. They had all been intensively involved in the political debates of the Weimar era, had survived National Socialism in exile in the United States, and all went on to become influential American intellectuals and political advisors. Udi Greenberg traces their paths and demonstrates through the application of approaches from intellectual history and politics that experiences from the Weimer Republic became foundational for Germany’s democratic reconstruction as well as for the transatlantic post-war order. Beginning in the interwar period in Germany and reaching until the end of the East/West conflict, this study illuminates five figures, their ideas, and the resulting political decision-making that was to have an enduring impact on Germany’s relationship to America as well as on the fabric of the Cold War.
