Kurzfassung:
Surveys anti-Jewish outbursts and growing antisemitic propaganda in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia during the 1930s, and examines the status of the Jews in these countries after the Nazi occupation of France in June 1940. The 1940 and 1941 anti-Jewish Vichy laws were also introduced in the North African territories, but were adapted to their specific legislation. Restrictions limiting the number of Jewish lawyers, physicians, and civil servants were partially implemented. A numerus clausus was enforced in schools, but the traditional Alliance Israélite Universelle school system was allowed to function. Mentions that in Tunisia some of the measures remained purely theoretical or were applied very slowly and only partially. The situation worsened in November 1942, after the American landing in North Africa, when Jewish forced laborers were used to build fortifications. Mentions Jewish self-defense and underground activities in Algiers. In the November 1942 resistance operation, on the eve of the arrival of American troops, of the 377 volunteers 315 were Jews.
