Abstract:
In late June-early July 1934 anti-Jewish riots broke out in the Turkish province of Trakya, which included eastern Thrace and the Çanakkale district. The riots, especially the pogrom in Kırklareli, led to the flight of ca. 3,000 Jews, roughly one quarter of the province's Jewish population, to Istanbul. The government failed to punish the main perpetrators of the riots and tried to downplay the events. A newly-discovered report by İbrahim Tali Öngören, Inspector-General of Trakya, leads to the conclusion that the government was responsible for the riots. In May-June of that year Tali Öngören toured the province to which he had been appointed and compiled a report in which he characterized the Jews of the region as a group disloyal to Turkey which disseminated communism and thus constituted a danger for this frontier region. The riots were probably incited by Tali Öngören with the intention of provoking the flight of the Jews from Trakya. The government then impeded the return of the refugees. A short time after the riots, Tali Öngören was transferred from Trakya, which suggests that the organization of the riots in the province was the only function of this officer for special tasks.
