Abstract:
Discusses recent actions of mainline Protestant Churches (mainly in the U.S., but also in other countries) in relation to Israel, characterized as an antisemitic drive by elites to mobilize members into supporting anti-Israel positions. Against the background of mainline Protestant silence concerning the Holocaust and the threat to the Jewish state in 1967, concludes that Protestants are hypocritical when they single out Israel for criticism. Relates to the recent boycott of Israel via a divestment campaign, and the platform given to Palestine liberation theologians, whose teachings are sometimes overtly antisemitic. Highlights the centuries-old Christian supersessionist doctrine, wherein the Jews are denied a meaningful existence and also a homeland. This theological delegitimization provides a basis for contemporary anti-Zionism among some of the Protestant Churches. Notes that rank-and-file members of the Churches (Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Methodist, Lutheran, Congregationalist, and Anglican) tend to be less anti-Israel than their leaders. Especially anti-Zionist are the Anglicans and the United Church of Christ, as well as the World Council of Churches and the Middle East Council of Churches umbrella groups.
