Abstract: Narratives about Alexander the Macedonian's life were extremely popular throughout the Middle Ages all over Europe and beyond. Crossing cultural boundaries, they were also adopted and adapted for a Jewish readership. In the latter context, the episode about the king's visit to Jerusalem served as a topos of interreligious encounter between the Jews and their non-Jewish rulers. It was first told by Flavius Josephus in the first century as a tale that sets idolatry in contrast with monotheism. Among other episodes, the text reports a dramatic encounter with the Jewish high priest. In medieval versions, Alexander suggests that the high priest erect a golden statue of himself in the sanctuary to honor God. The paper offers an in-depth analysis of this latter motif in different versions of the narrative against the background of medieval Jewish-Christian relations.

Abstract: Maimonides' Letter to Samuel Ibn Tibbon is preserved in one fragment in its Judeo-Arabic original version, only, but it also survives in sixteen Hebrew manuscripts and in an early printed edition. The analysis of the textual witnesses shows that four independent Hebrew translations of different sections of the Letter were produced. An additional version found in the editio princeps and related manuscripts is a combination of one of the earlier translations and one or more additional source(s), possibly a fifth Hebrew translation. Only this last version contains in the last section on the study of philosophical books a much debated reference to Ibn Rushd and to al-Farabi's Political Regime. In view of the hybrid character of the editio princeps it is necessary to study the Letter synoptically from all the witnesses. The analysis also shows that the so-called Letter probably consists of two separate pieces written at a distance of about ten days.

Abstract: Abraham Abulafia was a unique Jewish mystic of the thirteenth century. He was well versed in the works of Moses Maimonides and other philosophers and also had a deep understanding of letter permutation mysticism developed from various commentaries of Sefer YeṢirah. These diverse influences led Abulafia to develop a world-view emphasizing the differences between philosophical, traditional and Kabbalistic discourses. However, he argued that, ultimately, they refer to similar dynamics. This article focuses on the central role of divine flow (shefa) and the holy spirit in Abulafia's thought. The concept of the holy spirit as overflow was widely used in medieval literature across various religious traditions, such as Judaism, Islam and Christianity, to understand the nature of divine agency, causality and inspiration. Abulafia utilized this broad understanding to argue that all forms of discourse, whether philosophical or religious, are limited forms of the divine overflow. The only actual reality is the unified flow that transcends all forms of discourse and metaphysical and mental structures. Therefore, according to Abulafia, the mystical path is to transcend all forms of discourse and one's mental faculties and reach the state of union with the absolute divine flux.

Abstract: This essay examines instances in the Hebrew Bible in which language of the womb and birth are used as metaphors for human intellective creativity. Informed by Christine Battersby’s classic work in feminist aesthetics, it argues that the female somatics of birth provides a conceptual motif for the cultural complex of human making, especially in moral censure, aesthetic contexts, and prophecy. After establishing the parameters of the metaphor, the essay reads Proverbs 8 with Hannah Arendt’s concept of 'natality', arguing that this poem about primordial wisdom offers a meditation on the emergence of thought itself.

Abstract: In Abraham Cahan's 1896 novella, Yekl: A Tale of the New York Ghetto, Yekl/Jake is a Russian Jewish immigrant who repeats loud and self-aggrandizing accounts of himself as a proudly assimilated American. This article uses Hannah Arendt's writing on cliché and her 1943 essay "We Refugees" to argue that Cahan's depiction of Jake exemplifies a type of performance, one that Arendt witnessed among Jewish refugees during her own experiences of displacement: a pattern of narrative erasure and fabrication, alienation from community, and "insane optimism which is next door to despair" (Arendt [1943] 2007, 268). While recent scholarship has deftly explored performances of American identity related to gender and language in the novella, less attention has been paid to identifiable patterns of self-narrative: in particular, the pressure to give an account of oneself as already having been a compatriot, and the inevitable fissures that undermine such hopeful but fabricated stories.

Abstract: The paper offers a first comparison and critical review of the social and political theories of German-Jewish political thinker Hannah Arendt and Russian-born Zionist thinker Aaron David (A. D.) Gordon. Bringing these two thinkers into conversation sheds light on their distinctive human ontologies and competing theories of labor that led them, in turn, to critically assess modern politics. Subsequently, the analysis identifies the two thinkers’ opposing conceptual trajectories as underpinning their competing perspectives on the Jewish state. Whereas Arendt’s commitment to upholding neutral political spaces led her to call for safeguarding the state from the Jewish nation, Gordon’s view of nations as corporeal-organic entities led him to advocate securing the Jewish nation from statist institutions. In broader terms, the analysis seeks to add to the burgeoning literature in recent years that revisits the theoretical and ideological parameters conventionally understood as underlying the historical debate about the Jewish state. The analysis shows that whereas Gordon, as a Zionist thinker, set forth an antistatist doctrine, the non-Zionist Arendt assigned a key role to the state in securing Jewish national self-determination.

Abstract: This article argues that Moses Maimonides's Guide of the Perplexed first became known to a Latin Christian audience in Toledo before 1220, and that the section of it translated as the Liber de parabolis et de mandatis in 1223–24 (Guide III.29–49) is the work of Samuel ibn Tibbon and Michael Scot. Moreover, the introduction to exegesis that prefaces the translation reflects the work of ibn Tibbon. The article considers the impact early contact with the Guide had, first in Toledo, and then in Paris and Provence. The Guide presented a God who worked through the principles of Aristotelian physics, and offered an incentive to translate and study those works of Aristotle and his interpreters that illuminated these questions. Texts translated in Toledo under the inspiration of the Guide became core texts for Paris scholastics. William of Auvergne, the first Parisian scholar to use the translation, would play a key role in the trial of the Talmud. And Cardinal Romanus, to whom the Liber de parabolis et de mandatis was dedicated, is implicated in the controversy of the Guide itself among Jews at Montpellier.

Abstract: Among biblical accounts that invite skepticism, the antediluvian genealogies of Genesis have long attracted attention, with Methuselah famously living close to a millennium and others nearly as long. This study explores an analysis of the issue and its cognates in Revealer of Secrets (Ẓafenat paʿneaḥ), a fourteenth-century Torah commentary by Eleazar Ashkenazi that has only recently reentered the light of history. Striking is Eleazar’s teaching that Moses composed the chrono-genealogies in Genesis based on sundry traditions that contained “imprecise narrative hyperboles.” Eleazar also suggests that the patriarchal narratives are a “noble ruse” designed to inculcate belief in the world’s creation. Eleazar's exploration of the topic provides an entrée into the fertile mind and spirited pen of this barely known late medieval rationalist as well as into an unstudied chapter in the history of Jewish reflection on a challenging biblical crux that evoked much reflection and a rich medley of larger religious themes.

Abstract: Petrus Comestor’s Historia Scholastica is a broad biblical rewriting composed ca. 1160 in the milieu of the cathedral school of Paris and the abbey of St. Victor. Also known as the ‘popular Bible’, it was considered a pivotal biblical manual until the mid-16th century, as the over 800 extant manuscripts show. For his wide-raging work, Comestor uses a variegated pool of sources, among which one of the most important is Flavius Josephus, known to Comestor through its Latin translation. The use of Josephus in the Historia is unique in its extent and has received some scholarly attention, but further research ought to be made. This article highlights how Comestor not only uses the Jewish Antiquities to fill in the gaps in the biblical narrative, for example integrating the account of the Binding of Isaac with indirect speech between father and son extrapolated from the Antiquities, but also compares them with the Vulgate and the Septuagint, granting them the same authority to establish the historical truth of biblical history. Passages from the Historia Genesis and Exodi are analyzed to show how Comestor goes out of his way to reconcile Josephus’ account and the Vulgate, showing the remarkable authority which the Jewish historian has in his eyes.

Abstract: Because most readers of Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed read it in translations, the exact understanding of these translations is very important for the history of the interpretation of the Guide. The aim of this article is to show that Al- Harizi's translations of the Judeo-Arabic word taʾwil have an important philosophical implication. His translations change a few critical passages in the Guide and make the radical (naturalist) interpretation of the Guide by the readers of this translation very improbable. By contrast, the translation by Samuel Ibn Tibbon makes this interpretation completely plausible (as does the Judeo-Arabic original). In my opinion the changes by Al-Harizi are part of his more traditional conservative interpretation of the Guide.

Abstract: Medieval Jewish readings of the Akedah, the Binding of Isaac, remain almost entirely oblivious to the antinomy between ethics and the revealed divine command that many modern interpretations find at the heart of the story. This study explores an exception, the teaching of the fourteenth-century rationalist, Eleazar Ashkenazi ben Nathan Ha-Bavli. In his Revealer of Secrets, Eleazar seeks a remedy for what he takes to be the theological and moral scandals that arise when the Akedah is read according to its plain sense. While Eleazar’s treatment of the Akedah builds in many ways on that of Maimonides, it also adds novel layers regarding this most difficult of biblical accounts. For this reason, the study begins with a substantial review of Maimonides’ intentionally elusive treatment of the Akedah and its reception among some representative later medieval interlocutors. Turning to its main focus, the article supplies a case study in medieval Jewish rationalism at its limits, in both matter and manner.

Abstract: The following essay describes a typical uneasiness with regard to the reception of the intellectual legacy of German-Jewish women thinkers like Hannah Arendt, Bertha Pappenheim, Regina Jonas and Margarete Susman. The material reality of the large role played by such Jewish women thinkers may have vanished in the Shoah. Their Jewish intellectual descendants in Germany today have built upon their work, but that work takes place in contested territory, where other, non-Jewish scholars also lay claim to this legacy. In this personal reflection, I analyze the different motivations of non-Jewish and Jewish feminists in post-Shoah Germany to engage with Jewish thinkers. Certainly, the conflicts are also about academic power and the control of interpretation. Yet, they have a political quality that is interesting in and of itself, one that underlines the far-reaching impact of the intellectual legacy of Jewish women thinkers in societal discourse in Germany today.

Abstract: This study shows how Protestant scholars wrote about the First Jewish-Roman War and the destruction of Jerusalem, and demonstrates how this story was updated in relation to Jews and anti-Jewish politics in the Bohemian lands after 1550. Drawing on a large corpus of Latin and vernacular texts, the author shows that the Jewish revolt was linked primarily to eschatological expectations and to a critique of the Jews’ disruption of natural law, religious unity and the social order as based on sovereign-subject relations. With regard to individual works, the author traces the collective imagination of the day that helped to shape the alterity of Jews (including imaginary notions of cannibalism, unsettled lifestyles, and non-normative sexuality) and elaborates on the strategies of legitimisation for violence against contemporary Jewish communities through references to the past.

Abstract: Portraits of Abraham often bear the distinctive stamp of their creators, a fact attested in spiritual biographies of the patriarch in medieval Jewish literature. An example is Abraham as portrayed in the pages of a Torah commentary by the fourteenth-century Maimonidean Eleazar Ashkenazi ben Nathan ha-Bavli. In step with Maimonidean models, this Abraham ardently cultivates noesis as the principal religious activity. At the same time, he puts himself in grave danger in order to promote a revolutionary monotheistic teaching. While often taking his bearings from Maimonides, Eleazar can imbue Maimonidean ideas and interpretations with new resonances and turn them in novel directions. In his account of Abraham’s career as a monotheist missionary, Eleazar portrays Abraham in a manner without Maimonidean precedent when he imputes to the patriarch the use of mockery as a device to breach idolatrous ignorance. Eleazar emulates Abraham’s use of ridicule in his campaign on rationality’s behalf. Yet where Eleazar’s Abraham uses mockery against pagan irrationality, Eleazar deploys it to deride fruits of the midrashic hermeneutic and its foremost medieval spokesperson, Rashi. Put otherwise, Eleazar ridicules midrashim that threaten to turn the divine word into a propagator of the sort of unscientific myths Abraham so heroically opposed. In so doing, he positions himself in a line of enlighteners standing at the perennial crossroads between rational religion and popular faith.

Abstract: This article provides the first close comparative analysis of the Greek, Latin, and Hebrew versions of the ‘Maria Story’ or teknophagia, the account of the mother who ate her child within a besieged Jerusalem first recorded in Flavius Josephus’ Jewish War 6.201–203. Josephus’ original account was written in Greek in the first century. Within the following half-millennium, three Latin versions of the story developed: those of 1) the Latin translation of the War, 2) Rufinus of Aquileia’s translation of Eusebius’ Church History, which contains Josephus’ Greek version of the story, and 3) the Latin adaptation of Pseudo-Hegesippus or On the Destruction of Jerusalem (De Excidio Hierosolymitano). This latter text comprises a late fourth-century Christian rewrite of the War and served as the most important source for a Jewish text that would emerge five hundred years later: the so-called Sefer Yosippon, an early tenth-century Hebrew text which is arguably the first and most important installment of medieval Jewish historiography. Each of these texts has received scholarly attention, and sometimes several of them have been discussed together; the Maria Story itself has not escaped scholarly treatment. Yet for all this research the exact relationship between these texts and particularly their accounts of the Maria Story has never been explained clearly and in detail. This article fills this gap in the research and uses the Maria Story to explore source-critical, literary, philological, and rhetorical questions pertaining to these five versions of the Maria Story, with an emphasis upon De Excidio and Sefer Yosippon, the most understudied iterations of this developing ancient and medieval tradition, enhancing scholarly knowledge and appreciation of all these works as distinctive iterations of an interconnected web of tradition.

Abstract: Josephus may have held a notion akin to what we today call ‘natural law.’ However, unlike some other Hellenistic Jewish authors (like Philo), Josephus uses the specific Greek phrase [the] “law(s) of nature” sparingly, only five times in total. A survey of νόμος and φύσις in Josephus and other ancient Greek literature and an examination of the five passages where Josephus uses the Greek phrase “law of nature”—1) BJ 3.370; 2) BJ 3.374; 3) BJ 4.382; 4) AJ 4.323; 5) AJ 17.95—shows that Josephus did not employ the phrase to refer to what we call ‘natural law.’ Rather, by the phrase “law(s) of nature” Josephus always refers to passage between the realms of the living and the dead, i.e. the ‘domain’ in which law(s) apply. This does not mean that Josephus did not recognize a broader category of what we call ‘laws of nature’—fixed, universal laws that seem to govern human reality—but only that he did not refer to all these as “law(s) of nature.” Josephus’ “law of nature” does apply to everyone, but only in the context of right, wrong, and inevitable aspects of death and dying.

Abstract: While the Traditio apostolica ascribed to Hippolytus has primarily been the focus of studies about authorship and dating, this unique work also has much to suggest about rhetorical presentations of catechesis in the early Christian era. Comparing the TA to Josephus’s account of the Essenes in the Judean War and Iamblichus’s account of Pythagorean initiation in De vita Pythagorica, this essay argues that the TA’s presentation of catechesis can be read as constitutive of a quasi-apologetic defense of the Hippolytan “school” during the transitional period from school Christianity to monepiscopacy during the second century. Deploying similar Pythagorean imagery to describe the process of initiation, the author/editor of the TA makes a case for the Hippolytan school as offering a true philosophical way of life.

Abstract: This article addresses the constitutive role of heresy in Jewish modernity. Heresy – defined here in terms of assimilation – is commonly considered destructive to Jewish tradition. I, however, examine Hannah Arendt’s works on the model of the Jewish pariah and Isaac Deutscher’s notion of the non-Jewish Jew to identify a model in which heresy gives structure to a new, modern Jewish tradition. In Deutscher, the analysis shows, this tradition of heresy suggests a universal world-view that eventually empties Judaism of any particular content. Arendt, on the other hand, connects the possibility of Jewish particularity in the present with her ideal of the pariah-as-heretic. Heresy reflects neither assimilation nor rejection of Judaism but rather offers a new foundation for Jewish particularity. The argument shows how the heresy of the pariah is also foundational to early formulations of Arendt’s politics of plurality.

Abstract: The article focuses on two descriptions by Fulcher of Chartres, the author of the Historia Hierosolymitana, which concern the capture of the cities of Jerusalem (15 July 1099) and Caesarea (17 May 1101), and which have not been compared in detail in contemporary historiography and can complement the considerations on Fulcher’s work and his intellectual formation. The research supports the view that Fulcher of Chartres used, on the one hand, a motif from the Bellum Iudaicum of the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, and on the other hand, his own experiences and observations based on his participation in the capture of Caesarea (17 May 1101) and the reading of other sources, such as Gesta Francorum. This is indicated by the fact that Fulcher did not participate in the capture of Jerusalem, so he must have relied on other sources ; moreover, the author’s representation coincides with the work of Flavius Josephus with regard to the place and content of the action, as well as terms of the vocabulary used, such as the rare verb transglutire, which still appears in the Historia Hierosolymitana only in the descriptions of the capture of Jerusalem and Caesarea. Thus, the classical formation of the chronicler plays an important role in the creation of the account of the capture of Jerusalem, by the virtue of which he repeatedly embellishes the accounts in the other pages of the work. From this perspective, the description of, among other things, the disembowelling of fallen enemies in the search of riches in captured Jerusalem by the Franks could be a literary invention of Fulcher’s, rather than an actual record of the Crusaders’ deed, although this cannot be ruled out with certainty.

Abstract: This paper analyzes two transformative conceptions of qedushah (holiness) in medieval Jewish thought, Moses Maimonides’s and Moses Nahmanides’s. Maimonides reduces qedushah to the Mosaic commandments which he reconceives as communal institutions to constrain bodily desires and promote intellectualist values and as training for perfected individuals to de-corporealize themselves in imitation of God. Nahmanides argues that Maimonides’s legal reduction of qedushah leads to the absurd conclusion that the perfectly scrupulous law-abiding scoundrel who exploits loopholes in the law is qadosh! He therefore reconceives qedushah as a complement to the Mosaic commandments intended to counter the problem of the scoundrel. Thus qedushah is re-born as a corrective to abuse of the Law. Nahmanides then proposes two ways to achieve this goal: i) by rabbinic enactment of more laws to fill in (loop) holes in the Law and ii) by cultivating a virtue-oriented, non-legal conception of holiness as a character-trait that leads agents to act properly and spontaneously without legislation. For Maimonides the ultimate state of qedushah is the dis-embodied state of the intellect, for Nahmanides it is a state in which the whole person, body and soul, clings to the deity.

Abstract: Is there any reason for calling psychoanalysis a ‘Jewish science’? There is one, particularly significant: the affirmation of the act of birth thanks to which there emerges a new individual psychic life. In this article, I argue that the psychoanalysis which takes a positive view on the issue of separation is natalistic: it offers a particular philosophy of life, which chimes with the existential tenets of Jewish tradition. The Jewishness of psychoanalysis would thus manifest itself not so much in being a ‘science’, but in the way in which it follows the Jewish torat hayim, the ‘teaching of life’. The gist of this teaching lies in the specific attitude towards the human condition of natality: instead of trying to undo the trauma of birth, the Jewish singular life walks away from the place of its origin and never indulges in the phantasy of virtual return.

Abstract: Jewish thought can be seen as a collection of encounters between Jewish texts, thought, rituals, and the external culture. The clearest and most well-known example of such an "encounter" is Jewish thought in the emphasis on that of Maimonides and his successors, largely shaped by their encounters with Greek philosophy. Middle Ages, with an which was Similarly, many modern thinkers, such as Herman Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig, and even Rabbi Kook and Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, developed and shaped their philosophy following encounters with contemporary European philosophy - Neo-Kantian philosophy and German idealism. In this article, I will adopt this perspective, viewing Jewish thought as "sequence of encounters" and pointing out a new and fascinating encounter that is currently taking place: the encounter between Jewish thought and law and analytical philosophy. It will begin with a brief presentation and overview of analytical philosophy and will then turn to namine and discuss the implications of the encounter that has taken place in recent decades between analytical philosophy and modern Jewish thought for the worlds of research and philosophy.
