Abstract:
Examines several anti-Jewish passages in the works of Peter the Venerable. In "De Miraculis" II 15 he approvingly quotes a prior who refused to borrow money from Jews since one should not have dealings with the enemies of Christ. This theme is closely connected with chs. 4 and 5 of his "Adversus Judaeos, " as well as with his previous discussion of the inferiority of the ancient Jewish kingdom. In this work, Peter was one of the first polemicists to attack the Talmud. He argued that the Jews' refusal to accept the logic and authority of Christianity proved their non-human nature. In his Letter 130, to Louis VII (1146), Peter proposed to confiscate the Jews' ill-gotten gains to finance the Crusade. Argues that most of his writings express doctrinal anti-Judaism, but that his work was not well-known and did not inspire a wave of antisemitism, but was rather its expression.
