Abstract:
Since the concepts of antisemitism and anti-Judaism are imprecise and loaded, suggests a division of the polemics into racist, inter-ethnic, interreligious, and intra(ethno)religious categories. Using the above typology, analyzes the Gospel of John and Walther Grundmann's Nazi reception of it in 1938. States that John does not project a unified negative image of the Jews. The saying "salvation comes from the Jews" is an authentic and important part of a differentiated picture; the negative sayings are part of intra(ethno)religious polemics. Grundmann's overtly misojudaic interpretation, legitimizing racist actions against the Jews, was part of an inter-ethnic and racist polemic.
