Abstract:
Tracing the roots and the evolution of antisemitism in Bavaria, remarks that, more than in other German states, Bavarian Jews were subject to discrimination and humiliation. Mentions the decrees introduced by Bavarian Interior Minister Maximilian Montgelas, that recognized Judaism as a legal religion, but greatly restricted what Jews could do economically and socially. Refers to the antisemitic "Hep!-Hep!" riots, when Jews were held responsible for the political changes provoked by the French Revolution and the subsequent wars. Following the 1848 revolution, 300 Jews were forced to flee Bavaria. After the unification of Germany and the 1871 emancipation of the Jews, political and racial antisemitism was less virulent than in other German areas, but grassroots hostility to Jews remained endemic in Bavaria.
