Abstract:
In 1989 a questionnaire was distributed to high school and university students in West Germany and Israel concerning their knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust and their social and political attitudes. It revealed that the Germans know less about the Holocaust, understand its meaning to a lesser degree, and indicate lower emotional reactions in relation to the Holocaust than their Israeli counterparts. However, neither the German nor the Israeli youth had "worked through" the past. In Israel, especially, the Holocaust serves, as a rule, as a means to justify the individual's political attitudes, either left or right.
