Abstract:
Describes three conditions for "guilt-free massacre" as exemplified by Nazism and the Holocaust - the cultural, the psychological, and the political. The cultural conditions involved antisemitic Nazi propaganda and mythology, including the dehumanizing stereotype of the Jew. The psychological conditions involved unquestioning obedience to authority. The above are part of the process of political socialization, in which a population and its leaders justify acts of destruction, as did the Nazis, without feeling guilt.
