Abstract:
Analyzes the moral argumentation used by children of the Nazi era (i.e. children of perpetrators and witnesses, and those who were involved in the war but not in the extermination process) based on 95 interviews carried out between 1985-87. Outright denial of the Holocaust was not found. The majority drew a distinction between the evil and their parents and themselves, between past and present, or between themselves and their parents. Only a minority fully realized the horror of the Holocaust and the moral challenge of whether they too would have taken part in it under the same circumstances.
