Abstract:
Discusses attitudes of the Arab world toward the Holocaust since the 1930s, as well as the political implications of the Arabs' and the Palestinian national movement's reactions to the Holocaust, as reflected in Arab public discourse, the press, and academic studies. Contends that the reactions of Arabs to Zionist claims with regard to Palestine and the instrumentalization of the Holocaust by the Zionists shaped the Arabs' position toward the Holocaust and antisemitism in general. Arabs relate the Holocaust to European civilization and to the "Jewish question", projecting problems related to these issues onto the conflict over Palestine. They believe that Europe passed on her guilt feelings regarding the Holocaust to the Arabs and made the Palestinians suffer the consequences of the Holocaust. The response by Dan Michman, "Arabs, Zionists, Bishara and the Holocaust: A Political Essay or an Academic Study" ["Zmanim" 54 (Fall 1995) 117-119], contests Bishara's conclusions. States that instead of studying issues related to Arabs and the Holocaust, Bishara's article presents incidental Arab utterances about the Holocaust, and that he discusses what Arabs should think about the Holocaust in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Besides accusing Michman of misunderstanding and misrepresenting his initial article, Bishara's response to Michman ["Zmanim" 55 (Win 1995-1996) 102-105] traces in Michman's response nationalistic and paternalistic stances. Bishara contends that his article was meant to present universal lessons from the Holocaust that may be relevant to the Arabs, and to relate to the collective memories of the Jews, as well as of the Arabs, in relation to the Holocaust and their pivotal role in the constitution of the State of Israel and in the ongoing conflict over Palestine. Moshe Zuckermann ["Zmanim" 55 (Win 1995-1996) 106-107] contests Michman's denial of
Abstract:
the crucial role played by the Holocaust and its memory in Zionist efforts to constitute the State of Israel, Michman's rejection of Bishara's conclusions regarding the instrumentalization of the Holocaust by the Zionists and Israel, and Michman's rejection of Bishara's call for universal lessons from the Holocaust. Michman's response to the reactions of Bishara and of Zuckermann ["Zmanim" 56 (Sum 1996) 113-118] contests Bishara's claims that Zionism is a reaction to modern antisemitism and that the State of Israel was founded in reaction to the Holocaust, the missing differentiation between Arabs and Palestinians in Bishara's study, and Bishara's and Zuckermann's manipulative ways of universalizing the Holocaust, by which they actually dismantle the Holocaust of any unique Jewish characteristics.
