    Abstract: Dieses bewegende Buch ist das Ergebnis einer einzigartigen historischen Spurensuche: Inna Gerasimova beschreibt als präzise Chronistin exemplarisch das Schicksal weißrussischer Jüdinnen und Juden während der nationalsozialistischen Besetzung des Landes. Dafür verwendet sie auch zahlreiche Zeitzeugenberichte, die das damalige Geschehen lebendiger nachvollziehbar machen als Überblickswerke und Statistiken es können. Der kommunistische Kommissar und Partisan Nikolaj Kiselëv wagte im August 1942 den Versuch, über 200 jüdische Menschen aus dem Dorf Dolginovo mehr als 1.500 Kilometer durch von den Deutschen besetztes Gebiet zu führen – nach Osten, hinter die rettende Frontlinie auf sowjetisch kontrolliertes Gebiet. Für dieses riskante Unterfangen wird er heute in Yad Vashem als ein „Gerechter unter den Völkern“ geehrt. Was veranlasste Kiselëv zu seinem Entschluss und wie verlief dieser von ihm organsierte „Marsch des Lebens“? Welches Schicksal widerfuhr denen, die sich auf den Weg machten? Wie wurde Kiselëv in der Sowjetunion nach dem Krieg beurteilt und wie sah sein weiteres Leben aus?     Abstract: Zwischen 1933-1941 verließ knapp die Hälfte der aufgrund ihrer jüdischen Wurzeln verfolgten Münchner Bürger ihre Heimatstadt, um sich im Ausland ein neues Leben aufzubauen. Was bewegte die Münchner Juden dazu, den Schritt in die Emigration zu wagen? Unter der offensichtlichen Antwort der Erfahrung nationalsozialistischer Verfolgung verborgen lag ein vielschichtiges Netz aus Beweggründen. Anhand von Statistiken zur jüdischen Emigration aus München sowie durch detaillierte Einblicke in die Schicksale von vier Münchner jüdischen Familien stellt dieses Buch dar, wie unterschiedlich Entscheidungsprozesse für oder gegen die Auswanderung waren und wie stark die erfolgreiche Durchführung einer Emigration von einer Vielzahl externer Faktoren abhing.     Abstract: Der Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens (C. V.) wurde 1893 als Reaktion auf den Antisemitismus im Kaiserreich gegründet. Ganz den Prinzipien des Liberalismus verpflichtet, war er der Ansicht, den Anfeindungen durch Aufklärung und juristische Gegenwehr begegnen zu können. Der schnelle Zuwachs überraschte, führte aber dazu, dass der Centralverein zu einer der größten jüdischen Organisationen wurde. Dieser Erfolg fußte nicht nur auf der Abwehrarbeit, vielmehr repräsentierte der Centralverein eine selbstbewusste jüdische Identität innerhalb der Gesellschaft. Diese Symbiose aus Deutschtum und Judentum entsprach der Mehrheit des deutschen Judentums und so wurde der C. V. zu einem Hauptprotagonisten des deutsch-jüdischen Kultursystems. Umso mehr wundert es, dass er in der bisherigen Forschung als Organisation, als Geistesströmung und auch als politischer Akteur bis heute unterrepräsentiert blieb und oftmals nur im Lichte der gescheiterten Abwehrarbeit betrachtet wurde

    Abstract: Nach dem Tod des berühmten Hofjuden Leffmann Behrens in Hannover übernahmen seine Enkel dessen Firma, doch wurden sie 1721 ohne Beweise von der kurfürstlichen Justiz wegen Bankrottbetrugs angeklagt. Sie bekannten auch unter Folter nichts und blieben fünf Jahre im Kerkerturm. Berndt Strobach präsentiert den Fall nach dem archivalischen Befund und analysiert ihn in juristischer, ökonomischer und psychologischer Hinsicht. Einer der beiden Enkel verfasste einen persönlichen Opferbericht auf Jiddisch, der in der Edition von Simon Neuberg im Band enthalten ist. Sie wird begleitet von der ausführlich kommentierten Transliteration sowie der Übersetzung des Autors ins Hochdeutsche. Man gewinnt Einblicke in vormoderne Rechtsverhältnisse, aber auch in die Lebensweise der jüdischen ökonomischen Elite. Die Megillah-Transliteration bietet die reizvolle Möglichkeit, Erlebnisse in einer Sprache nachzuvollziehen, wie sie ein Jahrtausend lang von deutschen Juden gesprochen wurde

    Abstract: In Warsaw Ghetto Police, Katarzyna Person shines a spotlight on the lawyers, engineers, young yeshiva graduates, and sons of connected businessmen who, in the autumn of 1940, joined the newly formed Jewish Order Service.Person tracks the everyday life of policemen as their involvement with the horrors of ghetto life gradually increased. Facing and engaging with brutality, corruption, and the degradation and humiliation of their own people, these policemen found it virtually impossible to exercise individual agency. While some saw the Jewish police as fellow victims, others viewed them as a more dangerous threat than the German occupation authorities; both were held responsible for the destruction of a historically important and thriving community. Person emphasizes the complexity of the situation, the policemen's place in the network of social life in the ghetto, and the difficulty behind the choices that they made. By placing the actions of the Jewish Order Service in historical context, she explores both the decisions that its members were forced to make and the consequences of those actions.Featuring testimonies of members of the Jewish Order Service, and of others who could see them as they themselves could not, Warsaw Ghetto Police brings these impossible situations to life. It also demonstrates how a community chooses to remember those whose allegiances did not seem clear

    Abstract: The present volume contains thirteen articles based on work presented at the “XX. Century Conference: If This Is A Woman” at Comenius University Bratislava in January 2019. The conference was organized against anti-gender narratives and related attacks on academic freedom and women’s rights currently all too prevalent in East-Central Europe. The papers presented at the conference and in this volume focus, to a significant extent, on this region. They touch upon numerous points concerning gendered experiences of World War II and the Holocaust. By purposely emphasizing the female experience in the title, we encourage to fill the lacunae that still, four decades after the enrichment of Holocaust studies with a gendered lens, exist when it comes to female experiences

    Abstract: The first account of the August Trials, in which postwar Poland confronted the betrayal of Jewish citizens under Nazi rule but ended up fashioning an alibi for the past. When six years of ferocious resistance to Nazi occupation came to an end in 1945, a devastated Poland could agree with its new Soviet rulers on little else beyond the need to punish German war criminals and their collaborators. Determined to root out the “many Cains among us,” as a Poznań newspaper editorial put it, Poland’s judicial reckoning spawned 32,000 trials and spanned more than a decade before being largely forgotten. Andrew Kornbluth reconstructs the story of the August Trials, long dismissed as a Stalinist travesty, and discovers that they were in fact a scrupulous search for the truth. But as the process of retribution began to unearth evidence of enthusiastic local participation in the Holocaust, the hated government, traumatized populace, and fiercely independent judiciary all struggled to salvage a purely heroic vision of the past that could unify a nation recovering from massive upheaval. The trials became the crucible in which the Communist state and an unyielding society forged a foundational myth of modern Poland but left a lasting open wound in Polish-Jewish relations. The August Trials draws striking parallels with incomplete postwar reckonings on both sides of the Iron Curtain, suggesting the extent to which ethnic cleansing and its abortive judicial accounting are part of a common European heritage. From Paris and The Hague to Warsaw and Kyiv, the law was made to serve many different purposes, even as it failed to secure the goal with which it is most closely associated: justice

    Abstract: In eleven contributions, Visual Antisemitism in Central Europe, Imagery of Hatred deals with visual manifestations of antisemitism in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. The publication, which presents heretofore largely unknown materials, seeks responses from diverse perspectives to the question of the role of visuality in the development of antisemitic moods and political agendas that encouraged hatred towards Jews. The scope of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism always was and still is very wide: from stereotypical depictions that can conceal an underlying message through humorous content, to clearly formulated assaults that aim to escalate animosity towards an imaginary collective enemy. The goal in both these cases is the exclusion of Jews from the majority society imagined as a monolithic whole, and the reification of a dividing line between "us" and "them". With its wide thematic and methodological range, this book offers a comprehensive image of the phenomenon of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism and provides rich comparative material for the entire Central European region
    Abstract: In what way has anti-Semitism influenced fine art and visual culture in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day? Is there an embedded anti-Semitic iconography? Why does visual antisemitism arise today?     Abstract: Täter*innen sind heute omnipräsent - in Film, Fernsehen, Literatur, Forschung und Popkultur. Eine kritische Reflexion der Darstellungen ist besonders da geboten, wo sie zur Identifikation einladen. Paradigmatisch für diesen ambivalenten gesellschaftlichen Trend steht die Holocaust-Literatur aus Täterperspektive. Neben einem umfassenden thematischen Forschungsüberblick legt Eva Mona Altmann ein innovatives, interdisziplinäres Modell zur Textanalyse vor, das die spezifische Rhetorik der Täter, die Steuerung von Empathie und Sympathie sowie die Möglichkeit einer textimmanenten Dekonstruktion des Täterdiskurses durch das literarische Verfahren des unglaubwürdigen Erzählens berücksichtigt.

    Abstract: Ausgehend vom Gedenken an die Pogromnacht von 1938 untersucht der Band die Bedeutungswandlungen der Erinnerung an die Shoa und an die Geschichte jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland sowie die aktuellen Entwicklungen der erinnerungspolitischen Debatte, der Erinnerungsforschung und der Gedenkkultur. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage nach den zukünftigen Formen und Inhalten des Erinnerns und seiner institutionellen Manifestationen in politischen Diskursen, in der Wissenschaft und in den Gedenkorten.     Abstract: "A varied collection of articles on early Hebrew printing, encompassing motifs on title pages such as lions, eagles, and fish as well as the entitling of Hebrew books. The next section is on authors and places of publication addressing such diverse topics as a much republished book opposed to gambling, authors of books on philology and on the massacres of tah-ve-tat (1648-49); of articles on diverse and disparate places of printing, Chierie, Hamburg, Offenbach, Verona, and Slavuta, generally small barely remembered publishers of interesting works, and in the last location properly identifying the printer of the highly regarded Slavuta press. Included is a section on Christian-Hebraism with articles on Altdorf where polemical books were published and another on William Wotten, a Christian vicar who published the first English translation of Mishnayot. The result is a wide-ranging series of articles highlighting the activities of early Hebrew presses and printers"--

    Abstract: A pregnant mother, a teacher who had fallen ill, a thirty-year-old homeless thief, refugees from war-torn communities, orphans, widows, the mentally disabled and domestic servants. What this diverse group of individuals—mentioned in a wide range of manuscript and print sources in German, Hebrew, and Yiddish—had in common was their appeal to early modern Jewish communities for aid. Poor relief administrators, confronted with multiple requests and a finite communal budget, were forced to decide who would receive support and how much, and who would not. Then as now, observes Debra Kaplan, public charity tells us about both donors and recipients, revealing the values, perceptions, roles in society, and the dynamics of power that existed between those who gave and those who received.In The Patrons and Their Poor, Kaplan offers the first extensive analysis of Jewish poor relief in early modern German cities and towns, focusing on three major urban Ashkenazic Jewish communities from the Western part of the Holy Roman Empire: Altona-Hamburg-Wandsbek, Frankfurt am Main, and Worms. She demonstrates how Jewish charitable institutions became increasingly formalized as Jewish authorities faced a growing number of people seeking aid amid limited resources. Kaplan explores the intersections between various sectors of the population, from wealthy patrons to the homeless and stateless poor, providing an intimate portrait of the early modern Ashkenazic community

    Abstract: Im Frühjahr 1943 hatte die Gestapo die meisten der verbliebenen Juden aus dem Deutschen Reich deportiert und löste die letzten jüdischen Gemeinden auf. Neben einer größeren Zahl von in "Mischehe" lebenden Juden und ihren Kindern blieben einige tausend Untergetauchte zurück. Auf Befehl Hitlers kamen seit April 1944 zudem jüdische Zwangsarbeiter ins Reich, die in der Rüstungsproduktion eingesetzt wurden. Der Band dokumentiert ihr Schicksal genauso wie die Entwicklung der in Berlin koordinierten Politik der Judenverfolgung in Europa, die internationalen Reaktionen auf das Bekanntwerden der Verbrechen und die Haltung der deutschen Bevölkerung zum Massenmord an den Juden. Im Protektorat Böhmen und Mähren gab es in den beiden letzten Kriegsjahren nur noch wenige Juden außerhalb des Gettos Theresienstadt. Der Band schildert die antijüdische Politik der deutschen Behörden im Protektorat bis Mai 1945 und die Situation im Getto, das als Durchgangslager nach Auschwitz diente, von den Nationalsozialisten aber auch als Vorzeigegetto genutzt wurde, um die internationale Öffentlichkeit zu täuschen

    Abstract: ›Niedergang‹ oder ›Aufstieg‹ – zwischen diesen beiden Polen wurden bereits in der frühen ›Rassenhygiene‹ oder ›Eugenik‹ verschiedene Positionen eingenommen und Handlungsvorschläge unterbreitet, wie die sog. ›Entartung‹ der gesamten modernen ›Kulturmenschheit‹ aufgehalten bzw. deren sog. ›Höherzüchtung‹ vorangetrieben werden könnte. Die vorgeschlagenen Maßnahmen reichten dabei von reduzierter Hilfeleistung für sog. ›Schwache‹, über Heiratsförderungen oder -verbote und Zwangssterilisation bis hin zur staatlich gesteuerten Fortpflanzung der Menschen. Dies hatte zur Folge, dass sich zum Ende des 19. und am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts auch in Deutschland eine erhebliche Bandbreite an ›rassenhygienischer‹ Literatur entwickelte, welche die Grundlage der vorliegenden Diskursanalyse bildet. “Decline“ or “rise” – between these two poles of the early “Rassenhygiene” or “Eugenik” different positions and recommendations were proposed for the prevention of the so-called “Entartung” of the modern “Kulturmenschheit” or the promotion of the so-called “Höherzüchtung”. The suggested agendas covered limited assistance for so-called “weak”, special facilitation or ban of marriage and forced sterilization to the point of state-controlled reproduction of human beings. As a consequence, by the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century an extensive variety of “rassenhygienischer” literature emerged in Germany forming the basis for the present discourse analysis.

    Abstract: The main objective of the book is to allocate the grass roots initiatives of remembering the Holocaust victims in a particular region of Russia which has a very diverse ethnic structure and little presence of Jews at the same time. It aims to find out how such individual initiatives correspond to the official Russian hero-orientated concept of remembering the Second World war with almost no attention to the memory of war victims, including Holocaust victims. North Caucasus became the last address of thousands of Soviet Jews, both evacuees and locals. While there was almost no attention paid to the Holocaust victims in the official Soviet propaganda in the postwar period, local activists and historians together with the members of Jewish communities preserved Holocaust memory by installing small obelisks at the killing sites, writing novels and making documentaries, teaching about the Holocaust at schools and making small thematic exhibitions in the local and school museums. Individual types of grass roots activities in the region on remembering Holocaust victims are analyzed in each chapter of the book

    Abstract: A fascinating portrait of Jewish life in Suriname from the 17th to 19th centuriesJewish Autonomy in a Slave Society explores the political and social history of the Jews of Suriname, a Dutch colony on the South American mainland just north of Brazil. Suriname was home to the most privileged Jewish community in the Americas where Jews, most of Iberian origin, enjoyed religious liberty, were judged by their own tribunal, could enter any trade, owned plantations and slaves, and even had a say in colonial governance.Aviva Ben-Ur sets the story of Suriname's Jews in the larger context of Atlantic slavery and colonialism and argues that, like other frontier settlements, they achieved and maintained their autonomy through continual negotiation with the colonial government. Drawing on sources in Dutch, English, French, Hebrew, Portuguese, and Spanish, Ben-Ur shows how, from their first permanent settlement in the 1660s to the abolition of their communal autonomy in 1825, Suriname Jews enjoyed virtually the same standing as the ruling white Protestants, with whom they interacted regularly. She also examines the nature of Jewish interactions with enslaved and free people of African descent in the colony. Jews admitted both groups into their community, and Ben-Ur illuminates the ways in which these converts and their descendants experienced Jewishness and autonomy. Lastly, she compares the Jewish settlement with other frontier communities in Suriname, most notably those of Indians and Maroons, to measure the success of their negotiations with the government for communal autonomy. The Jewish experience in Suriname was marked by unparalleled autonomy that nevertheless developed in one of the largest slave colonies in the New World

In Political Survivors, Emma Kuby tells the riveting story of what followed his appeal, as prominent members of the wartime Resistance from throughout Western Europe united to campaign against the continued existence of inhumane internment systems around the world. The International Commission against the Concentration Camp Regime brought together those originally deported for acts of anti-Nazi political activity who believed that their unlikely survival incurred a duty to bear witness for other victims. Over the course of the next decade, these pioneering activists crusaded to expose political imprisonment, forced labor, and other crimes against humanity in Franco's Spain, Maoist China, French Algeria, and beyond. Until now, the CIA's secret funding of Rousset's movement has remained in the shadows. Kuby reveals this clandestine arrangement between European camp survivors and American intelligence agents. She also brings to light how Jewish Holocaust victims were systematically excluded from Commission membership – a choice that fueled the group's rise, but also helped lead to its premature downfall. The history that she unearths provides a striking new vision of how wartime memory shaped European intellectual life and ideological struggle after 1945, showing that the key lessons Western Europeans drew from the war centered on "the camp," imagined first and foremost as a site of political repression rather than ethnic genocide.     Abstract: Die Holocaustforschung ist in den vergangenen Jahren um Forschungsansätze ergänzt worden, die als komparativ-postkolonial beschrieben werden können. Sie untersuchen die Geschichte von Nationalsozialismus und Holocaust aus der Perspektive einer postkolonialtheoretisch geschulten vergleichenden Genozidforschung. Dabei würden sich strukturelle und ideologische Parallelen und Gemeinsamkeiten aufzeigen, die die Forschung bisher ignoriert habe. Steffen Klävers untersucht in seiner Studie, welches heuristische Potential solcherlei Zugänge für die NS- und Holocaustforschung besitzen. Dabei geht er einerseits auf historische, aber auch erinnerungskulturelle und modernitätstheoretische Ansätze ein. Er rekonstruiert die Argumentationstechniken dieser Ansätze kritisch und problematisiert Punkte, an denen sie mit zentralen Erkenntnissen der NS- und Holocaustforschung brechen

    Abstract: In der Geschichte der deutschen Turn- und Sportbewegung ist der 30. Januar 1933 ein markantes Datum. Deutsche Turn- und Sportvereine und ihre Verbände zählten zu den Wegbereitern / Vorreitern der Arisierung der deutschen Gesellschaft nach der nationalsozialistischen Machtübernahme. Sie waren Akteure in dem politischen und gesellschaftlichen Wandlungsprozess. Die freiwillige Einführung des Arierparagraphen bereits im Frühjahr 1933 in zahlreichen Vereinen und Verbänden - zu einem Zeitpunkt als sich die neue nationalsozialistische Sportführung noch nicht etabliert hatte -, war ein erster Schritt auf dem Wege des beispiellosen Zivilisationsbruchs. Die Dokumentensammlung bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die rechtlichen Vorgaben deutscher Turn- und Sportvereine und ihrer Verbände bezüglich der Diskriminierung und Ausgrenzung der jüdischen Sportlerinnen und Sportler in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren. Darüber hinaus werden Vorgaben, Beschlüsse etc. kommunaler und staatlicher Einrichtungen sowie der NSDAP und ihrer Organisationen die jüdischen Sportlerinnen und Sportler betreffend aufgeführt.
    Abstract: In der Geschichte der deutschen Turn- und Sportbewegung ist der 30. Januar 1933 ein markantes Datum. Deutsche Turn- und Sportvereine und ihre Verbände zählten zu den Wegbereitern / Vorreitern der Arisierung der deutschen Gesellschaft nach der nationalsozialistischen Machtübernahme. Sie waren Akteure in dem politischen und gesellschaftlichen Wandlungsprozess. Die freiwillige Einführung des Arierparagraphen bereits im Frühjahr 1933 in zahlreichen Vereinen und Verbänden - zu einem Zeitpunkt als sich die neue nationalsozialistische Sportführung noch nicht etabliert hatte -, war ein erster Schritt auf dem Wege des beispiellosen Zivilisationsbruchs. Die Dokumentensammlung bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die rechtlichen Vorgaben deutscher Turn- und Sportvereine und ihrer Verbände bezüglich der Diskriminierung und Ausgrenzung der jüdischen Sportlerinnen und Sportler in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren. Das Handbuch versucht, entlang einzelner Begriffe wie Ritual, Aufklärung, Diaspora, Sefarad / Aschkenas oder Zionismus sowie verschiedener Forschungsgebiete wie Philosophie, Mystik, Recht oder Ökonomie, Einblicke in die Geschichte des Judentums zu geben.

Antworten findet Stefan Wiese in den Handlungen aller Beteiligten, also der Täter, der Opfer, der Zuschauer und der Vertreter der Staatsmacht. Jede Gruppe verfügte über spezifische Ressourcen und verfolgte eigene Ziele, jede Gruppe beobachtete die übrigen und handelte dementsprechend.     Abstract: Main description: Black Jews in Africa and the Americas tells the fascinating story of how the Ashanti, Tutsi, Igbo, Zulu, Beta Israel, Maasai, and many other African peoples came to think of themselves as descendants of the ancient tribes of Israel. Pursuing medieval and modern European race narratives over a millennium in which not only were Jews cast as black but black Africans were cast as Jews, Tudor Parfitt reveals a complex history of the interaction between religious and racial labels and their political uses. For centuries, colonialists, travelers, and missionaries, in an attempt to explain and understand the strange people they encountered on the colonial frontier, labeled an astonishing array of African tribes, languages, and cultures as Hebrew, Jewish, or Israelite. Africans themselves came to adopt these identities as their own, invoking their shared histories of oppression, imagined blood-lines, and common traditional practices as proof of a racial relationship to Jews. Beginning in the post-slavery era, contacts between black Jews in America and their counterparts in Africa created powerful and ever-growing networks of black Jews who struggled against racism and colonialism. A community whose claims are denied by many, black Jews have developed a strong sense of who they are as a unique people. In Parfitt’s telling, forces of prejudice and the desire for new racial, redemptive identities converge, illuminating Jewish and black history alike in novel and unexplored ways.

    Abstract: Main description: Der Staatssekretär im Reichsministerium des Innern Wilhelm Stuckart (1902-1953) war einer der wichtigsten juristischen Interpreten und Legitimatoren des NS-Staates. Als Mit-Autor der Nürnberger Rassegesetze goss er dessen biologistische Grundlagen in Gesetze und begleitete später die Vorbereitungen zum Genozid. Im Frühjahr 1942 vertrat er auf der Endlösungskonferenz am Wannsee sein Ressort. Nach dem Krieg gehörte Stuckart zu den Schöpfern der Legende von der "sauberen Verwaltung", die sich den rassistischen Ansprüchen der NS-Machthaber widersetzt habe. Die biographische Auseinandersetzung mit Stuckart belegt nicht nur die prägende Funktion von führenden Juristen in der NS-Verwaltung, sie untersucht auch die Rolle der Innenverwaltung und ihre Mitwirkung am Genozid.

    Abstract: The first volume of the Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaeae/Palaestinae covers the inscriptions of Jerusalem from the time of Alexander to the Arab conquest in all the languages used for inscriptions during those times: Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Latin, Syrian, and Armenian. The approximately 1,100 texts have been arranged in categories based on three epochs: up to the destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70, to the beginning of the 4th century, and to the end of Byzantine rule in the 7th century.

    Abstract: Deutsche Banken, Sparkassen und Genossenschaften wurden bereits kurz nach dem Überfall auf Polen im Herbst 1939 in den annektierten polnischen Gebieten und im Generalgouvernement aktiv. Neben dem Alltagsgeschäft verdeutlicht Ingo Loose besonders die Kooperation der Banken bei der Enteignung und der "Germanisierung" des Eigentums der polnischen und jüdischen Bevölkerung und deckt ihre Verstrickungen in die Finanzierung der Ghettos, der Siedlungs- und Deportationsprojekte, des Zwangsarbeitereinsatzes, der Rüstungsproduktion sowie des Holocaust auf. Loose zeigt die jeweiligen Handlungsspielräume, aber auch die Perspektive der von der NS-Wirtschaftspolitik betroffenen Opfer von Enteignung, Deportation und Ermordung.     Abstract: Main description: Der Deutsche Bundestag verabschiedete im Jahr 2002 einstimmig das "Gesetz zur Zahlbarmachung von Beschäftigungszeiten in einem Ghetto". Damit sollte eine Lücke bei der Wiedergutmachung nationalsozialistischen Unrechts geschlossen und Holocaust-Überlebenden der Bezug einer Rente für Arbeit im Ghetto ermöglicht werden. Die Umsetzung des Gesetzes erwies sich indes als problematisch. Weit über 90 Prozent der rund 70.000 Anträge wurden von den Rentenversicherungsträgern abgelehnt. Tausende von Prozessen vor Sozialgerichten sind die Folge, in denen nicht zuletzt komplexe historische Aspekte beurteilt werden müssen. -- Der vorliegende Band vereint Beiträge von Historikern und Juristen, die die vielschichtige Problematik aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven beleuchten. Mit Noach Flug, dem Präsidenten des Internationalen Auschwitzkomitees und Vorsitzenden des Dachverbands der Holocaust-Überlebenden in Israel, kommt auch ein Betroffener und hochrangiger Repräsentant der Opferverbände zu Wort.

Die Vichy-Regierung schwankte in ihrer Politik zwischen der Verwirklichung einer autochthonen Politik und der Anpassung an deutsche Forderungen. Mit Hilfe eines Vergleichs kann der Autor wichtige neue Antworten zur Struktur des NS-Staates und Vichy-Frankreichs sowie zu deren Politik gegenüber den Juden finden.

In vielen Städten wurden zunächst jüdische Beamte und Angestellte entlassen, dann jüdische Wohlfahrtsempfänger durch Leistungskürzungen, Arbeitszwang und Isolierung diskriminiert. Diese Praxis der Wohlfahrtsämter mündete schließlich in die zentrale Verordnung vom November 1938, die den Ausschluss der jüdischen Armen aus dem staatlichen Fürsorgesystem dekretierte. Wolf Gruner dokumentiert auf einer umfangreichen Quellenbasis erstmals die Impulsfunktion kommunaler Initiativen für den Verlauf der NS-Judenverfolgung. Die vergleichende Darstellung der Politik deutscher Großstädte und Wiens birgt überraschende Ergebnisse zum Verhältnis von lokaler Verwaltung und Gestapo. Die Studie zeigt: Die "soziale" Enteignung jüdischer Staatsbürger durch Beamte und Angestellte der staatlichen Fürsorge ist ein wichtiges, bisher zu wenig beachtetes Element der Vorgeschichte des Holocaust.     Abstract: Welche Entwicklung erfuhr der Antisemitismus in Spanien, als nach dem Vertreibungsedikt (1492) das Land nicht länger ein Ort der Koexistenz verschiedener ethnischer Gruppen war? Dies war das zentrale Thema eines Kolloquiums in Konstanz (Mai 2000), dessen Ergebnisse hier vorgestellt werden. An dem Kolloquium nahmen Anthropologen, Historiker und Literaturwissenschaftler teil. Diese interdisziplinäre Annäherung konzentrierte sich auf die Faktoren, Räume, Zahlen und Stimmen, die in den antijüdischen (und damit antisemitischen) Diskurs involviert waren, sowohl in ihrem historischen Kontext als auch in ihrer literarischen Darstellung. Bei dem letzten Thema ist dem apologetischen Aspekt ebensoviel Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet worden wie dem kritischen.
    Abstract: What development did anti-Semitism take in Spain when, after the Banishment Edict (1492), the country was no longer a locus of co-existence for different ethnic groups? This was the topic central to the colloquium in Konstanz (May 2000), the results of which are presented here. The colloquium united anthropologists, historians and literary scholars. This interdisciplinary approach focused on the factors, spaces, figures and voices involved in anti-Jewish (and hence anti-Semitic) discourse, both in their historical context and in their literary representation. On the latter issue, as much attention is given to the apologetic as to the critical aspect.

    Abstract: Der Sammelband dokumentiert die Beiträge eines interdisziplinären Symposiums, das im Dezember 2000 an der Universität Klagenfurt stattgefunden hat. Anhand von exemplarischen Untersuchungen werden unterschiedliche Versionen jüdischer Identität(en) im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert analysiert, wobei die Polyphonie der Diskurse über jüdisches Leben und Denken herausgearbeitet wird. Des weiteren wird die Wechselwirkung zwischen der kulturvermittelnden Tätigkeit jüdischer Intellektueller und der Entstehung bzw. Rezeption der Moderne im mitteleuropäischen Raum dargelegt. Der Schwerpunkt der Analysen liegt im frühen 20. Jahrhundert, in Ausblicken wird auch die Post-Shoah-Epoche in den Blick genommen. Der Untersuchungsgegenstand umfasst die Länder Mitteleuropas mit den Schwerpunkten Wien, Böhmen/Mähren, Ungarn, Bukowina, Galizien, den südslawischen Ländern und Triest
    Abstract: The volume assembles the papers delivered at an interdisciplinary symposium held at the University of Klagenfurt in December 2000. The studies focus on a variety of different topics, all of which shed light on different versions of Jewish identity (or identities) in the 19th and 20th centuries. They also mirror the polyphonic nature of the discourses on Jewish life and thought. Another aspect highlighted by the collection is the interaction between Jewish intellectuals as cultural mediators and the evolution and reception of modernism in central Europe. The main focus is on the early 20th century, with some attention also given to the post-Shoah epoch. Geographically, the studies concentrate on major centres and regions of central Europe, notably Vienna, Bohemia/Moravia, Hungary, Bukovina, Galicia, the southern Slavonic countries, and Trieste
