Abstract:
Analyzes the significance of the metaphor of Judaism as illness in Heine's and Herzl's writings. Herzl envisaged Zionism as a remedy for the "illness" of the Jewish people. Mentions the anti-Jewish allegation in ancient times that Jews brought leprosy from Egypt, a prejudice used to isolate and stigmatize them. Focuses on the use of the degeneration theory developed in 19th century Social Darwinism in reference to the history of the Jews, and pseudo-scientific arguments on Jewish pathological traits and tendencies. Remarks on the increasing trend in modern antisemitism to spread the ideas of a Jewish dual and abnormal character, and Jews as a sick and degenerate people representing a demonic, dangerous force. This trend was enforced by Nazi propaganda and used in practice to enforce Nazi Germany's anti-Jewish policies.
