Abstract:
Discusses the concept of the "chosenness" of the Jewish people as a major cause of antisemitism. Notes that some Jewish intellectuals (e.g. the writer A.B. Yehoshua) have advocated abandoning this concept, while others have stressed the importance of the Jews' being different. Freud contended that antisemitism was a result of jealousy of the Jews' chosenness, as did Disraeli. The historian Jules Isaac, whose meeting with Pope John XXIII in 1960 eventually led to the "Nostra aetate" declaration, emphasized jealousy of the Jews' chosenness as the main cause of Christian antisemitism. Notes that the idea of supersessionism, the displacement of the Jews by the Christians, developed as a reaction to this jealousy. Recent Vatican documents have stated that God's covenant with the Jews remains valid, but there is still controversy regarding this issue. Discusses, also, the views of Muslims who claim to have superseded both Jews and Christians as God's chosen people, noting that these views are due to jealousy as well.
