Abstract:
In recent years, matters such as real estate ownership and responsibility for exploitation of victims as they were led to the death camps touched a raw nerve within European society. Claims on property highlight the fact that Germany's horrible schemes could not have been realized without the enthusiastic collaboration of war criminals of other nationalities and greedy bystanders. Each nation created for itself a collective national memory, in which historical facts were mingled with myths, half-truths, and self-denial. Discusses the issue of stolen Jewish property and how some European countries have dealt with it: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Great Britain, France, and Eastern Europe. Pp. 25-29 contain an annex, "Committees of Inquiry and Historical Reevaluation", listing the activities of committees appointed in 14 countries (including the USA and Latin America).
