Abstract:
Relates events in September-October 1943, following the German occupation of Rome. On 26 September, the head of the SD in Rome, Herbert Kappler, met with Jewish leaders and demanded 50 kilos of gold to be handed over in 36 hours, promising that the Jews would not be harmed if this demand was fulfilled. The Jews thought they were saved when the gold was delivered. But Eichmann had ordered the arrest and deportation of Rome's 8,000 Jews. Describes the attempt by E.F. Moellhausen, the German consul in Rome, to stop this action. On 16 October the roundup took place but was considered a failure because some 7,000 Jews had gone into hiding. 1,259 were captured, according to Gestapo records. After 252 half-Jews, spouses in mixed marriages, and foreign Jews were freed (the reason is unknown), the remaining 1,007 were deported to Auschwitz. Only 15 survived. Mentions the anti-German feeling this action aroused among the Christian populace, and the aid given to Jews, noting consternation in the Vatican but no objection voiced by the Pope.
