Abstract:
An account of the life of Otto Hirsch, president of the Stuttgart Jewish community and executive director of the Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden. Emphasizes his work on behalf of Jewish education and his courageous stand in the face of Nazi persecution. Until the end of 1935 Hirsch continued to believe that a place would be found for Jews in Germany if they were willing to adapt. After the Nuremberg Laws, in September 1935, Hirsch was imprisoned in a concentration camp as a result of his part in the public reading of a prayer by Leo Baeck protesting the defamation of Jews. After his release, Hirsch directed his efforts towards the first priority - emigration - while refusing to leave Germany himself. He continued his relief work from July 1939 in the framework of the Nazi-appointed Reichsvereinigung until his death in Mauthausen in 1941.
