Abstract:
Compares two chronicles: a Jewish one, "Shevet Yehuda" by Solomon Ibn Verga, and a Christian one, "Memorias del reinado de los Reyes Católicos" by Andrés Bernáldez. Despite a number of similarities between the texts, the chroniclers differ in their interpretations of the expulsion. For example, Ibn Verga believes that its cause was the king's wish to offer a sacrifice giving thanks to God for the capture of Granada, whereas Bernáldez ascribes the expulsion mainly to the bad influence of Jews on Conversos. According to Bernáldez, the Jews "senselessly" perceived their expulsion as a new exodus from Egypt, heralding the messianic era, while Ibn Verga regards it as banishment from a homeland. Ibn Verga does not regard the expulsion as a final catastrophe, nor does Bernáldez see it as the "final solution" of the Jewish and Converso problems. The Spanish chronicler does not believe that the "inherently corrupt" Jews would indeed adopt Christianity, and regards the Conversos as perennial heretics.
