Abstract:
The Christian writer Paulo Álvaro, who lived under Muslim rule in Córdoba, recorded a debate conducted by him in 840 against Bodo Eleazar, a former German deacon converted to Judaism, who had moved to Córdoba in order to practice the Jewish religion in freedom. The controversy arose in the context of the persecution of Christians by Muslims. Paulo Álvaro tried, based on traditional patristic anti-Jewish arguments, to convince Bodo Eleazar that the prophecies contained in the Old Testament announcing the coming of the Messiah were fulfilled in the person of Jesus, transforming Christianity into the "Verus Israel" and Judaism into an outdated religion.
