Abstract:
Between 1940-44, a new artistic landscape emerged in southern France; new art centers were established in many towns. Despite the difficulties of everyday life - the lack of supplies, the arrests, etc. - artistic creativity lived on. But under the Vichy regime, cultural and artistic work depended on support from the prefects, mayors, or other authorities at the local or national level. Jewish artists generally benefited from this support on various fronts. This attitude in their favor, often for personal reasons, can be described as "disobedience" to the law, fed by sympathy for the Jews. The aid to the Jews was provided covertly. It became increasingly more dangerous in 1942-43, when the Germans gained partial and then complete control over the area.
