Abstract:
Discusses the use of "graphic novels", i.e. comic book-style art, to present serious book-length works by the cartoonist Will Eisner (1917-2005). His "To the Heart of the Storm" (1991) dealt significantly with the antisemitism he experienced growing up in the Bronx. His posthumously published "The Plot: The Secret Story of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion" (2005) refutes the "Protocols", traces its widespread use (including by the Nazis), and relates it to violent antisemitism in our time. Eisner also created a graphic novel called "Fagin the Jew", criticizing Dickens for creating that antisemitic character. According to Eisner's wishes, an Arabic edition of "The Plot" may be published, in response to the popularity of "The Protocols" in the Arab world.
