Abstract:
From the middle of the 17th century until the present, three stereotypes about Brazilian Jews and Conversos have taken root in Brazilian society, a fact which is reflected even in Brazilian historiography. The stereotypes contend that Jews and Conversos had an aversion to agricultural work, that they played a critical role in the introduction of slavery into Brazil, and that they had enjoyed a privileged status under the Dutch occupation of northern Brazil between 1630-54 and had sided with the Dutch in the war against Portugal. In agreement with Anita Novinsky, states that there is proof that Conversos played a very important role in the development of agriculture in Brazil, especially in the introduction of sugar cane; that, regarding slavery, those Conversos who dealt in the slave trade were limited to its commercialization inside the country but did not engage in trafficking; and that, during the Dutch reign in the north, the Jews suffered from the hostility of both Calvinists and Catholics, and there were many Conversos who sided with the Portuguese against the Dutch.
