Abstract:
Elucidates, comments on, and rejects the charge of forgery by Jews of the Extended Privilege granted to the Jews of Great Poland and ratified by King Kazimierz IV in 1453. The privilege contributed to the strengthening of the legal status of the Jews in Old Poland. Shows that consideration of the privilege as a forgery by some Polish historians, especially by Stanislaw Kutrzeba in the second half of the 19th century, reflected their negative view of the Jewish community in Old Poland. Concludes that doubt cast on the authenticity of the Extended Privilege - despite numerous ratifications by Polish kings - helped maintain the atmosphere of suspicion towards Jews in Polish circles and revived repeated claims for reducing the legal basis for Jewish activities in Poland.
