Abstract:
The Inquisition was established in Coimbra in 1541, but only in 1563 did it become a real threat to the Conversos who had initially preferred to remain there. After 1563 they began to flee to France, Spain, Flanders, and overseas territories, despite a decree in 1567 forbidding them to leave. The centralization of Inquisitorial activities in 1573 further increased emigration. For a time, thanks to King Sebastian, wealthy Conversos could emigrate freely, but in the 1580s all emigration was forbidden and repression intensified. The Inquisition extended its visits to Beira and to Trás-os-montes, both of whose large Converso communities escaped via Spain to other countries. Those who left during the regime of King Sebastian mainly settled in the Duchy of Ferrara.
