Abstract:
Reflects on Jan Błoński's essay "The Poor Poles Look at the Ghetto" ("Tygodnik Powszechny", 1987). Points to the new way of writing about Polish-Jewish relations during World War II, from the moral dimension and free of political embroilments. Analyzes some of the reactions to this essay immediately after its publication, focusing on the article by Władysław Siła-Nowicki, a Polish lawyer involved in the anti-communist opposition. Siła-Nowicki opposed Błoński's views and accused him of an anti-Polish attitude and of being dangerous for the Polish nation. Głowiński remarks that this way of thinking stems from interwar-period nationalistic circles, later adopted by the communists; it is still present in Polish historical discourse.
