Abstract:
Exemplifies the situation of the Jewish communities in Poland in the 1950s through analysis of the problems of the Jews in Lower Silesia. Antisemitism, omnipresent in postwar Poland, increased in 1956-57 due to its use as a political tool in the struggle for power in governing circles. There were also incidents of discrimination, beatings, threatening letters, and distribution of antisemitic leaflets which caused the Jewish population to feel insecure in Poland. The Jews were very disappointed with the communist regime which promised a Poland free of racial prejudice. Political and party reactions to this antisemitism were rare. There was an increase in emigration of Jews in this period; by October 1957, more than 23,000 Jews had left Lower Silesia, almost 70% of the entire Jewish population in the region.
