Abstract:
The ritual murder trial of Mendel Beilis, which took place in Kiev in September-October 1913, shocked Jewish public opinion all over Europe, especially in the Russian Empire. Discusses the reaction in the most popular Warsaw daily Yiddish newspaper "Haynt". During the trial, reports from the courtroom sent by a team of "Haynt" correspondents from Kiev, as well as editorial comments from Warsaw, filled more than 90% of the newspaper. The trial was presented as a great tragedy for the Jewish nation as a whole. The paper depicted the Jewish nation as united against this assault. Contends that the reactions to the trial fit well into the national project of the Yiddish-speaking intelligentsia in the Russian Empire whose goal was to turn a community of Yiddish readers into a conscious political nation.
