Abstract:
Describes the social and religious situation in 4th-century Antioch, stating that relations between Jews and Christians were very good and that many Christians were attracted by the Jewish religion. Many Christians celebrated Jewish holidays. This situation was very disturbing for Church authorities who were trying to consolidate the new Christian faith in the Roman Empire. Argues that the eight "Adversus Iudaeos" homilies delivered in Antioch by Chrysostom were directed against Judaizers (Christians frequenting synagogues). In order to stop such behavior, which he considered dangerous for the Church, he violently attacked the Jewish faith and the Jews. Pp. 53-69 contain a translation of the first and eighth speeches into Polish.
