Abstract:
A speech delivered at the Sinagoga di via Farini on 10 November 2013, marking the 70th anniversary of the persecution of the Jews in Firenze by the Nazi occupiers with the assistance of local Italian fascists. The actions were led by a unit called “Judenkommando”, under the command of captain Theo Dannecker. On 6 November 1943, the main synagogue on the via Farini was assaulted, as well as other Jewish institutions; many Jews were arrested and deported. On 5-6 November, in the city of Siena, house to house searches were carried out looking for Jews; they were arrested and their homes were looted. Most of the Jews in Firenze and Siena were deported to the camps. On 26-27 November, several Catholic convents in which Jews were hiding were assaulted; mainly women and children were arrested, as well as priests and nuns. Aid was given to the persecuted by the underground organization Comitati ebraico-cristiano, founded in Firenze in September 1943 and headed by Rabbi Nathan Cassuto and by Cardinal Elia della Costa who ordered the convents in Firenze and its surroundings to hide Jews. States that the actions of the Nazis were greatly facilitated by an infrastructure created by the Italians, especially concerning public registers of Jews, and by the collaboration of many Italian fascists.
