Abstract:
Discusses the centrality of storytelling and listening as theme and idea in the work of Primo Levi, basically in his non-Holocaust book "La chiave a stella" ("The Wrench, " 1978), with emphasis on its implications for his works of Holocaust testimony. Storytelling is associated both with catharsis and memorializing power. The storyteller in general, and Levi in particular, are shown as in great need of being listened to. Failure to listen is a betrayal of humanity. Testimony should not be ignored even if historically flawed or embellished. Studied knowledgeably in context (e.g. supplemented by other accounts), it can be part of the process of understanding. Implies that listening is owed to those who risk telling their stories, even about ordinary matters, since the latter, as in Levi, often reflect extraordinary matters, such as the Holocaust.

In particular, on his "La chiave a stella".
