Abstract:
Discusses the preparations for and proceedings of the 1952 Slánský trial, whose prime victim was Rudolf Slánský, secretary-general of the Czech Communist Party after World War II and one of the fourteen leading party members prosecuted. Eleven of these figures, including Slánský, were Jews. The trial was part of the Soviet attempt to consolidate communism in satellite states, and to strengthen the group of Czech leaders controlled from Moscow. The pre-trial investigation was run by Russian secret agents. The Slánský trial had a distinct anti-Jewish, anti-Zionist, and anti-Israel character, making an open accusation of a worldwide Jewish conspiracy.
