Abstract:
Describes the persecution of the Jews of Esens (East Frisia; 82 Jews in 1933) by the town council as well as the townspeople. Jews expelled from their homes lived in crowded conditions in the former Jewish school and community house. In the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, the synagogue was destroyed; the Jews (men, women, children, and infants) were driven through the streets, beaten and humiliated, while their homes were vandalized; the men were sent to Sachsenhausen. Recounts the fate of the different families: some managed to escape abroad, many perished in the East. In 1990 the school and community house was turned into a museum of Jewish life and of the Holocaust in East Frisia.

On the fate of the Jewish community center, the "Judenhaus", in Esens during the Holocaust and afterwards.
