Abstract:
Bodón (or Bodo) was born in Germany. He became a deacon of the Church serving the Frankish Emperor Louis the Pious in his palace. In 839 he decided to convert to Judaism, and therefore fled to the south of Spain - i.e. Muslim Spain, where he converted. He then took the Hebrew name Eleazar, married and settled in Zaragoza, where he worked for the municipality. This conversion stirred up a lot of controversy in Andalusia, where the Muslims were put to task by the Church for having allowed this conversion. Examines the extant correspondence between Albaro of Córdoba, a scholar, poet, and theologian, and Bodo who Albaro wished to reconvert to Christianity (apparently unsuccessfully), including anti-Jewish polemical texts, and anti-Christian arguments by Bodo.
