Abstract:
Surveys the text of the Hebrew account of the Talmud trial in Paris in 1240, entitled "Vikuach Rabbenu Yehiel." Relates the events leading up to the trial: in 1238, Pope Gregory IX received a memorandum from Nicolas Donin containing 35 accusations against the Talmud. The Pope transmitted the accusations in a letter to the king of France and to other European rulers. Louis IX of France ordered the confiscation of the Talmud and established a tribunal in 1240 to dispute the charges, with Donin as the prosecutor. States that the defense, conducted by three rabbis, was weak and unconvincing.
