Abstract:
Describes the affair of the ship "St. Louis", carrying 907 German Jewish refugees, which left the port of Hamburg on 13 May 1939 destined for Havana. The Cuban authorities refused to allow the refugees to disembark. Eventually, they were forced to return to Europe and were dispersed in Holland, Belgium, France, and Great Britain. France accepted the refugees only in transit. Surveys French press accounts from June 1939, both Jewish and non-Jewish. The French press was very neutral in describing the events, which can be explained by the delicate relations between France and Germany in 1939. The Jewish press showed gratitude toward and faith in the French authorities, which from the perspective of later events can be seen as derisory.
