Abstract:
Discusses reactions of Orthodox Jewry to the Holocaust, including the view that God "hid His face" or reduced His presence in order to allow people to choose between good and evil, Irving Greenberg's view that God is just but not omnipotent, and the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) view that the Jews were punished for their sins. Focuses on the reaction of Rabbi Menahem Mendel Schneersohn, expressed in some of his writings in the 1970s and in a letter to Chaika Grossman in August 1980. He contended that, since God is just, the Holocaust must have been good for the Jews spiritually, although it was bad for them physically. He compared the Holocaust to an operation in which one part of the body is amputated in order to save a person. However, when asked why so many Orthodox Jews were killed, especially in Poland, he stated that humans cannot understand the ways of God. Bauer notes that the death of one million children also cannot be explained, and that Walter Zvi Bacharach advocated continued belief in God but also anger with Him.
