Abstract:
In 1896, Philippe Sapin attempted to produce a complete index of names and addresses of the Jews in France. Although he claimed he was not hostile to Jews, Sapin recorded some 13,000 Jewish family names (including converts), considering them all as part of a corrupt and dangerous race. Since no record of religious belief was kept in France, he obtained the information from local authorities, Jewish year books, and lists of Jewish philanthropists, assisted by Christian collaborators. Although incomplete, the "Indicateur" provides a general picture of the Jewish population, mainly tradesmen and employees, and only two moneylenders, in contrast to the author's warnings of a Jewish invasion of the administration, education, and the press. In reaction to the publication of the list, some of those included claimed to be half-Jewish, converts, or atheists; others denounced it as an invasion of privacy and an attempt to divide the French nation. Some threatened to sue the author or physically attack him.
