Abstract:
Analyzes the persistence of Austrian nationalism, from the Dollfuss regime to the recent presidential campaign, in which Waldheim identified himself with Austria and his struggle for exculpation with that of the Austrian people. Waldheim's Österreichische Volkspartei appealed to the voter with barely veiled antisemitic messages. This political exploitation of antisemitism should be seen in the context of the Austrian tradition exemplified by Lueger. In other, no less antisemitic countries (e.g. France during the Dreyfus Affair), political antisemitism met with effective resistance.
