Abstract:
An abridged version of a paper delivered at the conference "The Holocaust in the Soviet Union", held at Yeshiva University, New York, October 1991. Discusses the reflection of the Holocaust in Soviet publications, in literature, and in the arts, focusing on the propagandistic methods of politicization (attacking the Western world) or distortion, motivated by the desire of the Soviet regime not to separate the Jewish tragedy from the general suffering of the Soviet people under Nazi occupation. Many references to Nazi massacres appeared in the press during the trials of war criminals, but they frequently avoided mentioning that the victims were Jews. Yevtushenko's poem "Babi Yar" and Shostakovich's Thirteenth Symphony dedicated to the Holocaust were strongly criticized in the Soviet press. Surveys literary works, works on Nazi crimes (e.g. by Ehrenburg and Grossman), and reflections of the Holocaust in Yiddish literature and in the Soviet cinema and theater.
