Abstract:
Argues that "The Trial" (1915) is an allegory of institutionalized antisemitism fueled by pervasive and unrelenting anti-Jewish public opinion during Kafka's lifetime. "The Trial" is a pre-Holocaust representation of pre-Holocaust antisemitism, and the "The Fixer" (1966), loosely based on the Beilis blood libel case, is a post-Holocaust representation of pre-Holocaust antisemitism. In both novels, judges are powerless to exonerate because it is the population at large that has brought the charges and convicted the victim. The judges can only temporarily suppress society's vengeance; the antisemitism can lie dormant, but revive at any moment.
