Abstract:
Contends that Jews who immigrated to America from Eastern Europe (especially Russia and Ukraine) held attitudes toward Negroes similar to their attitudes toward the muzhik (peasant) in the Russian Empire. Jews saw themselves as superior to muzhiks, but also feared them because they could be violent. Jews felt guilty for cheating muzhiks. They pitied the muzhik, but also envied him. The Jews did not hate the muzhik; they did not blame him for anti-Jewish actions; they blamed the system, or the authorities - e.g. priests, or the government. However, there is a Jewish distrust of the masses and their leaders who share prejudices, including antisemitism. Following this description, talks about differences between muzhiks and Negroes, and differences in the accompanying Jewish attitudes.
