Abstract:
Discusses the influence of Sartre's "Réflexions sur la question juive" on three autobiographical essays by French Jews: Albert Memmi's "Portrait d'un Juif" (1962), Robert Misrahi's "La condition réflexive de l'homme juif" (1963), and Alain Finkielkraut's "Le Juif imaginaire" (1980). Concludes that although the texts engage with Sartre's views very differently, they all convey the sense that permutations of the Sartrian model of an intersubjective and existential relationship between Jews and non-Jews no longer satisfy their intellectual and emotional quest for a meaningful Jewish identity.
