Abstract: Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try is a first-of-its-kind exhibition on the 20th-century artist and Holocaust survivor Boris Lurie. Centered around his earliest work, the so-called War Series, as well as never-before-exhibited objects and ephemera from Lurie’s personal archive, the exhibition presents a portrait of an artist reckoning with devastating trauma, haunting memories, and an elusive, lifelong quest for freedom. In drawing together artistic practice and historical chronicle, Boris Lurie: Nothing To Do But To Try is fertile new territory for the Museum of Jewish Heritage, offering a survivor’s searing visual testimony within a significant art historical context.

Abstract: Since 24 February 2022, Russian aggression and the murderous war against the Ukrainian people take us back to the darkest times in European history. Tens of thousands dead, cities partially razed, millions of Ukrainian refugees wandering across Europe. How to react, as a museum, how to show a sign of solidarity with those under attack when direct cooperation with a Ukrainian museum is currently proving impossible and our own collections contain almost no objects related to this country? By pure coincidence, MNHA was already long before the start of hostilities in contact with Russian born artist Maxim Kantor, well known for his very critical attitude towards the Putin regime and recent developments in Russia. Kantor spontaneously agreed to show more than sixty of his works that unmask the totalitarian and aggressive character of the current Russian regime.

Abstract: A contemporary of Rauschenberg, Warhol, Lichtenstein and Johns, Boris Lurie arrived in New York in 1946, having survived nearly four years in Hitler’s death camps. He was just 21. Over the next 60 years, his art became his life, his refuge, his therapy and his means of protesting the racism, anti-Semitism and social hypocrisy he encountered in the United States; its Cold War nuclear rivalry with the Soviet Union; and its interventionist policies abroad. In 1959, he, Sam Goodman and Stanley Fisher founded the NO!Art movement, reflecting Lurie’s views that artists should use their talent to protect and defend the interests of the people in the communities and countries where they live. At this difficult time in our history, it is our hope that Boris Lurie’s legacy, his art and his courage, will serve as an inspiration for artists everywhere to express their political views in their art, to increase awareness and understanding of the political issues we’re confronted with today.

Abstract: In this pathbreaking study of responses to the Holocaust in wartime and postwar Polish literature, Rachel Feldhay Brenner explores seven writers' compulsive need to share their traumatic experience of witness with the world. The Holocaust put the ideological convictions of Kornel Filipowicz, Józef Mackiewicz, Tadeusz Borowski, Zofia Kossak, Leopold Buczkowski, Jerzy Andrzejewski, and Stefan Otwinowski to the ultimate test. Tragically, witnessing the horror of the Holocaust implied complicity with the perpetrator and produced an existential crisis that these writers, who were all exempted from the genocide thanks to their non-Jewish identities, struggled to resolve in literary form. Polish Literature and the Holocaust: Eyewitness Testimonies,1942-1947 is a particularly timely book in view of the continuing debates about the attitudes of Poles toward the Jews during the war. The literary voices from the past that Brenner examines posit questions that are as pertinent now as they were then. And so, while this book speaks to readers who are interested in literary responses to the Holocaust, it also illuminates the universal issue of the responsibility of witnesses toward the victims of any atrocity--Provided by publisher

Abstract: This study deepens our historical understanding of the North-African Jewish and Middle Eastern Jewish experience during WWII, which is often under- or mis-represented by the media in Israel, the Arab world, France, and Italy. Public, historical and sociocultural discourse is examined to clarify whether these communities are accepted by the world as \'Holocaust survivors\'. Further, it determines the extent to which their wartime history is revealed to Israeli society in its cultural performances. Importantly, this work addresses the reasons why the Holocaust of North African Jewry is absent from Israeli and world consciousness. Finally, the study contemplates the consequences of these phenomena for Israeli society as well as in the colonial countries of France and Italy

Abstract: "This book deals with two very painful and traumatic events in Jewish and Palestinian history...the Holocaust and the Nakba. Both events, which differ in nature and in degree, have had a decisive impact on the subsequent history, consciousness and identities of the two peoples. The Holocaust has become a central component of Jewish identity, particularly since the late 1970s and the 1980s, in Israel and around the world. The Nakba and its persisting consequences have become a crucial part of Palestinian and Arab identities since 1948. For the Palestinians, the Nakba is not merely about their defeat, their ethnic cleansing from Palestine and the loss of their homeland, nor even about having become a people most of whom live as refugees outside their land, and a minority living under occupation in their own land. The Nakba also represents the destruction of hundreds of villages and urban neighborhoods, along with the cultural, economic, political and social fabric of the Palestinian people. It is the violent and irreparable disruption of the modern development of Palestinian culture, society, and national consciousness. It is the ongoing colonization of Palestine that continues to the present through colonial practices and polices like Jewish settlements, illegal land acquisition, and the emptying of villages"...

Abstract: The figures in Roni Taharlev’s paintings are ambiguous, in two respects: the world that they inhabit is undefined, its historical and geographic coordinates are unclear, and in most instances their gender is unclear and subject to interpretation. These ambiguities are deliberate, and also interrelated. This is an attempt to create portraits that lie on the spectrum between femininity and the masculinity, that straddle the midway point between what are conventionally regarded as two poles. These are not portraits of actual characters with a nonconformist gender, but rather form part of a purely artistic inquiry – namely, an attempt to negate or counteract gender traits in a bid to achieve a “zero degree” of gender. What brings us closer to it is youth: the time before the portrait is imbued with a life story, before the subject’s expression is shaped by a social role and the body assumes the trappings of social status. One can point out the combinations of feminine and masculine traits in each and every picture. The difficulty in pinning down the gender of the figures makes us aware of the gender-attribution process that usually occurs automatically and unconsciously, and of our discomfort at failing to do so. Indeed, gender is such a key social category, that gender ambiguity induces a sense of unease, like that of a niggling riddle that requires resolution. In addition, the characters appear to be removed from the here and now, but the few accessories that they are given – a garment, a flower, a butterfly, or a fantasy bird – are not enough to place them in any other definite space. This question of location also extends to the works’ painterly composition. The portraits appear to belong to another era – but which one? Are we in the Renaissance, in the Baroque period, or the nineteenth century? Is it realism, fantasy, or allegory? The only thing that can be said with any certainty is that these figures inhabit not an actual historical context of any kind, but the realm of art. This is especially evident in the Annunciation paintings, depicting the famous scene in the New Testament, in which the Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus. To this artistic topos that includes an encounter between two figures – a young woman and an angel – Taharlev offers an original reinterpretation. In her images, she explores various gender possibilities: in one instance, the angel is a man, in another it is a woman, and in yet another, a girl, and the Virgin Mary is depicted as somewhat androgynous. All that remains of the Annunciation theme is the vaguely charged nature of the situation, which despite the nudity is devoid of any eroticism. There is no doubt that Taharlev is conducting an intensive and multi-faceted dialogue with the history of art, and the preoccupation with the question of gender in her works is not of a psychological or social nature, but rather an inquiry that has more to do with the pictorial qualities of the works and their intra-artistic resonances. After all, white ravens are such rare creatures, that they belong almost exclusively in the realm of art. Text by Amalia Ziv

Abstract: Bundist Legacy after the Second World War offers an account on post-war Bund, the most important Jewish political party in East Europe before the outbreak of the Second World War. This subject area has attracted more attention in the last few years, when a new generation of scholars is trying to assess the “transformation” of memory and the political, cultural and pedagogical role played by the last members of Bund. This volume aims to create a new “Bund” (union) after the end of historical Bund, and help to answer the question, “What is to be done after the birth of Israel?” The volume is one of the first attempts to answer this crucial existential and political question

Abstract: Victoria Aarons and Alan L. Berger show that Holocaust literary representation has continued to flourish—gaining increased momentum even as its perspective shifts, as a third generation adds its voice to the chorus of post-Holocaust writers. In negotiating the complex thematic imperatives and narrative conceits of the literature of these writers, this bold new work examines those structures, ironies, disjunctions, and tensions that produce a literature lamenting loss for a generation removed spatially and temporally from the extended trauma of the Holocaust. Aarons and Berger address evolving notions of “postmemory”; the intergenerational transmission of trauma; inherited memory; the psychological tensions of post-Holocaust Jewish identity; tropes of memory and the personalized narrative voice; generational dislocation and anxiety; the recurrent antagonisms of assimilation and alienation; the imaginative reconstruction of the past; and the future of Holocaust memory and representation

Abstract: "Develops the biblical idea of "turning" (tshuvah) into a conceptual framework to analyze a particular area of contemporary German history, commonly referred to as Vergangenheitsbewältigung or "coming to terms with the past." Chung examines a selection of German responses to the Nazi past, their interaction with the victims' responses, such as those from Jewish individuals, and their correspondence with biblical repentance. In demonstrating the victims' influence on German responses, Chung asserts that the phenomenon of Vergangenheitsbewältigung can best be understood in a relational, rather than a national, paradigm"--

Abstract: Filled with new elements that challenge common scholarly theses, this book acquaints the reader with the “Jewish problem” of sociology and provides what this academic discipline urgently needs: a one-volume history of the Sociology of the Holocaust. The story of why and how sociologists as well as the schools of sociological thought came to confront the Holocaust has never been entirely told. The volume offers original insights on the nature of American sociology with implications for the post-Holocaust sociology development

Abstract: Jerzy Malinowski's book represents the first draft of a history of painting, graphic design and sculpture by Polish Jews. The book is devoted to the Jewish artistic circles in Poland, but also to the works of those artists who came from the Belorussian-Lithuanian region as well as Polish artists who were active in Berlin in the period before World War I. The author addresses individual works of art in particular detail, their symbolism and their links to social or political ideologies.

Abstract: The Jewish Museum Berlin is dedicating a major retrospective show to Boris Lurie and his radical artistic examination of the 20th century. Lurie is an artist who demanded political relevance from art and the art market. His much-discussed and controversial works accuse society of shirking coming to terms with its crimes against humanity by packing evidence of them between advertising and everyday banalities. His collages confront the viewer with the experience of persecution and prison camp in the Nazi era, provoking "horror and fascination" (Volkhard Knigge). For Lurie’s work reveals disgust toward a humanity that proved itself capable of exiling and murdering millions as well as revulsion against a self-satisfied art market more interested in financial profit than in artistic expression. His drawings, however, strike a different tone. In "War Series" of 1946, Lurie created an initial inventory of his own experience of persecution and camp imprisonment during the Nazi regime while his "Dancehall Series" of the 1950s and 60s depicts poetic images of his time.

Abstract: Mark Podwal is renowned for his innovative ink drawings and paintings of the Jewish experience. Initially known for his drawings for The New York Times Op-Ed page, he is the illustrator of numerous books in collaboration with the likes of luminaries such as Elie Wiesel, Harold Bloom, and Francine Prose. Reimagined: 45 Years of Jewish Art is a massive collection and first monograph of this famed and prolific artist; one who has connected with art lovers from New York, Prague, Israel, and everywhere in-between. In this extended collection, the reader encounters the diverse array of works that represent and span Podwal’s illustrious career; from the whimsical, such as Matzoh Moon and Talmud Typewriter, to the political, such as Munich Massacre and Annexing Arab Anger, to the religious, which includes Passover Haggadah illustrations and textile designs from the world’s most historic synagogues. Luxuriously produced and spanning 45 years of intensive work, this collection of Podwal’s oeuvre contains more than 350 gorgeously reproduced artworks that imaginatively illuminate Jewish legend, history, and tradition. Reimagined is a must-have not only for collectors of Jewish art, but for anyone interested in the process of creating beautiful and original drawings and the personal evolution of a major artist.

Abstract: Fritz Ascher (1893-1970) gilt als Vertreter der Berliner Expressionisten.

Abstract: Alongside his extensive pioneering work as a prominent video artist in Germany, Marcel Odenbach’s (b. 1953, Cologne) oeuvre extends to drawing and collage. The exhibition presents a selection of collages focusing on the motif of windows shown from the inside. From a distance, Odenbach’s window images—specific and photograph-based—seem to offer a whole, spectacular image. However, on closer inspection two visual plains are discerned, simultaneously different yet reflecting and constructing one another.

Abstract: Tsibi Geva has been selected to present Archeology of the Present in the Israeli Pavilion at the 56th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia. Geva, who lives and works in Tel Aviv, is one of Israel’s most prominent and influential artists and has exhibited extensively in major exhibitions across Israel, the USA, and Europe. Geva works in diverse media, his work often pushing beyond its physical limits into unique large-scale, site-specific installations. Archeology of the Present will extend over the exterior of the pavilion as well as through its interior, destabilizing familiar divisions between inside and outside, functional and the representational, high and low, abandoned, found, and manipulated elements. It will encompass formal and thematic elements characteristic of Geva’s work throughout his career and will present paintings alongside sculptural installations and abandoned and manipulated objects, abolishing hierarchical distinctions between artistic mediums and structures. In doing so, the project will give expression to Geva’s ongoing concern with elements related to the notion of ‘home’ – including terrazzo tiles, windows, shutters, lattices, and cement blocks; elements which exist as fragments of what once was, or could in principle constitute, a home. The project will raise self-reflexive artistic concerns and epistemological questions, as well as political and cultural questions of locality and immigration, hybrid identity, existential anxiety and existence in an age of instability. The physical layout of the project will create sharp transitions between experiences of blockage, discomfort, or spatial ambiguity and intimate, poetic moments, so that fragility and crudeness, lyricism and violence, are inextricably intertwined. Geva’s work contains numerous layers of significance shaped by processes of figuration and abstraction, revelation and concealment. The question of painting in particular, and of the art object in general, is present in his work alongside political and cultural questions, which simultaneously camouflage and enhance one another. Employing disruption and displacement, repetition and accumulation, Geva makes hybrid works that open up new discursive channels. Geva’s long-term engagement with the stratified structure of identity, and Archeology of the Present in particular, will offer an opportunity to explore this notion within the wider narrative of nationality as proposed by the Venice Biennale. In a year when curator Okwui Enwezor proposes to focus on “All the World’s Futures,” Geva’s site-specific, all-encompassing installation may also be read with regard to the current state of humanity and the world.

Abstract: Ronald Brooks Kitaj (1932-2007), born in Ohio (USA), was one of the most important artists in London's art scene of the 1960s. He was a fervent reader and book collector and his colourful and sometimes provocative paintings contain many political, philosophical and literary references. Kitaj's Jewish identity played an important role in his life and work. Bringing together paintings from collections around the world and a series of screen prints of book covers that Kitaj made in 1969-70 with the master printer Chris Prater, the exhibition Unpacking My Library offers a fascinating insight into Kitaj's unique Jewish, bibliophile sensibility. The series In Our Time: Covers for a Small Library After the Life for the Most Part reflects the humour and irony with which Kitaj questioned the role of spirituality and morals in the modern age. The exhibition takes place in the print room.

Abstract: "An interdisciplinary study of a diverse set of public speeches given by major literary and cultural figures in the 1950s and 1960s. Through close readings of canonical speeches by Hannah Arendt, Theodor W. Adorno, Ingeborg Bachmann, Martin Buber, Paul Celan, Uwe Johnson, Peter Szondi, and Peter Weiss, Sonja Boos demonstrates that these speakers both facilitated and subverted the construction of a public discourse about the Holocaust in postwar West Germany. The author's analysis of original audio recordings of the speech events (several of which will be available on a companion website) improves our understanding of the spoken, performative dimension of public speeches. While emphasizing the social constructedness of discourse, experience, and identity, Boos does not neglect the pragmatic conditions of aesthetic and intellectual production--most notably, the felt need to respond to the breach in tradition caused by the Holocaust. The book thereby illuminates the process by which a set of writers and intellectuals, instead of trying to mend what they perceived as a radical break in historical continuity or corroborating the myth of a "new beginning," searched for ways to make this historical rupture rhetorically and semantically discernible and literally audible"--

Abstract: This exhibition examines the work of five figurative artists working in Britain in the 1950s, who each had a strong identification with the place in which they chose to live and work and which formed, for a significant part of their careers, the primary focus of their practice. Each associated themselves with a particular place: Eardley - Townhead in Glasgow; Fell, the mining community and landscape of her native Aspatria, Cumbria; Frankfurther - London's East End and its multi-cultural working-class communities; Herman - Ystradgynlais in South Wales with its indigenous mining community; and Lowry - his hometown of Manchester and its industrial, multi-peopled cityscape. This exhibition links these five seemingly disparate artists by uncovering a network of relationships, both personal and professional, and their shared exploration of particular artistic concerns and motifs. This exhibition is one of the outcomes of the Eva Frankfurther Research and Curatorial Fellowship for the Study of Emigré Artists.

Abstract: The Museum’s rare collection of photographs and drawings by Alois Breyer (1885–1948) of East-European wooden synagogues destroyed in WWII is presented to the public for the first time. The exhibition stages a dialogue between more than a hundred works by Breyer, Frank Stella (b. 1936) and El Lissitzky (1890–1941), showing how geometric abstraction transforms the language, narrative and beauty of the synagogues into a modern and contemporary idiom.

Abstract: ‘Life and Art Through Stained Glass’ examines the artistic career of architect, painter, designer and stained glass innovator Roman Halter. His near 50-year career as an artist would, had circumstances been different, have been much more widely recognised, as his command of many crafts was significant and distinctive. Stained glass is an exact, technical, complicated, architectural art-form that merges engineered structures, on one hand, with both depth and balance of colour appropriate to its space, on the other. Like many architects, Halter could ably address the technical requirements, but it was his innate creativity and his talent as a visual artist that allowed him to move between disciplines and to join a select group of practitioners who are today recognised as pre-eminent in this field. His stained glass windows can be found in synagogues across London. In The Room of Prayer at Leo Baeck College he designed a series of small, brilliantly coloured squares of stained glass to decorate each window and designed and made part heart-shaped, part Menorah-shaped glass and aluminium windows for the ark containing the Torah. At the New North London Synagogue two tall, vertical, primary-coloured windows are inscribed in Hebrew, and at the North Western Reform Synagogue, eighteen monumental designs are intricately decorated with the theme of Life “Chai”, the Hebrew letters for the number 18. In The Central Synagogue an azure panorama of an idealised Jerusalem illuminates the stairwell mezzanine, whilst his commanding, prismatic Jacob Wrestling with the Angel stretches the capacity of stained glass design to new and near-abstract limits. In 1978 when this work was received it was considered an artistic step too far, but it has come to be recognised as a virtuoso work within this medium. After only seven years working in the discipline, in 1983 Halter began his three-year collaboration with Henry Moore, working on a blue stained glass window, Reclining Figure, which is one of the centrepieces of this exhibition.

Abstract: "The Holocaust is often described as beyond representation. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives, this ground-breaking collection of essays by leading international scholars takes the Scrolls of Auschwitz as its starting point. These powerful hand-written testimonies, which were buried in the grounds of the crematoria at Birkenau in 1944, seek to bear witness to mass murder from at its core. The accounts, which are often marginalized in studies of Holocaust testimony, are frequently highly literary and ask significant questions of the notion that Auschwitz cannot be attested to. The volume also includes a number of essays that consider other forms of testimony, in media such as film, literature and video, which have also been marginalized as they fail to conform to dominant ideas about the nature and structure of the event"--

Abstract: Ninety-three drawings and paintings will be installed, comprising Lurie's documentation and recollection of his experiences in concentration camps of Nazi Germany at the end of the war. Created from mid 1945 though late 1946, the work is a chronology of Boris's time there when he worked for the Allied occupying army and saw survivors living in Displaced Persons Camps that still resembled the likenesses of the former Nazis’ death camps. In 1945 Lurie was twenty-one years old and had no formal training in art, beyond the grade school level. Remarkably, he was able to create visually powerful depictions of prisoners marching out of enormous labor barns, Allied soldiers overseeing DP inmates and tending to management duties, survivors still dressed in stripped uniforms as they try to put themselves and their lives back together, as well as unnamed portraits and emaciated women, nude and sometimes with shaved heads. Throughout all of this work there is the presence of fierce raw talent. Lurieʼs violently strong, graphic line quality is confident and assured, with a tense nervous energy that reminds us of El Greco, who Boris admired. We also see, in nascent form, subjects Lurie will explore throughout his career: dancing figures, emotional figurative compositions, and nude women, an obsessive theme that will reemerge in his shocking work of the '50s and '60s. There is a grim look to this work that provides forceful visual credibility to the assessment of Earl G. Harrison, Truman's envoy to the DP camps, when he said: "We appear to be treating the Jews as the Nazis treated them, except that we don't exterminate them.”

Abstract: American-born artist R.B. Kitaj (1932 - 2007) was one of the most controversial artists of the second half of the twentieth century. His distinctive, highly personal and often challenging works drew on many influences ranging from literature to politics and film. The British museum holds a near complete set of the artist's proofs, the best representation of the artist's graphic works in the UK. Kitaj worked in England for almost forty years. It was in London that he had developed his early style and influenced many of his friends, including David Hockney, Lucian Freud and Frank Auerbach. This led Kitaj to coin the term 'school of London', later associated with this group of purely figurative artists. Exhibition: British Museum, London, UK (30.5.-1.9.2013)
