Abstract:
Examines the United Church of Canada’s policy toward Israel from 1967 to 1974, and its relations with the Canadian Jewish community. A.C. Forrest, editor of "The United Church Observer", launched a campaign of vehement attacks against Israel and Zionism, and lobbied the Canadian government to adopt an anti-Israel policy. His views culminated in the publication of an article by John Nicholls Booth, "How Zionists Manipulate Your News", in "The United Church Observer" in March 1972. The B’nai B’rith sued Forrest, Forrest filed a countersuit, and B’nai B’rith then sued both Forrest and the United Church. Although prominent members of the Church generally supported Forrest’s views, some opposed them, but all wished to avoid conflict. Reconciliation talks, begun in September 1972, led to an understanding after the Yom Kippur War (1973). Forrest thereafter avoided attacking Israel directly.
